Theres tons of wild speculation, here and other places. Safe bet is the Tacos engine and 6spd transmission and a bunch of little electronic gizmos, IMO.

I want the new 4Runner to be a no-frills XTerra-type body on the new Tacoma chassis (same engine, transmission, gearing etc).

Built alongside the Tacoma in the US for extra cost-effectiveness, using the front end, seats, interior, etc. from the Tacoma. They can even call it the Tacoma T4R package. MSRP at 28k for the SR5.
 
^Current pricing and configurations are very profitable for Toyota - moreso than if they were to take that type of "minmalist" approach, I am quite sure.

I don't think we'll see pricing going down anytime soon (unfortunately).
 
I'm still guessing the 3.5L in the new Tacoma is going to end up in the 6th Gen 4Runner.

If that engine proves reliable, Toyota will put it other models. Don't be surprised to even see it in the Tundra, tweaked for a little more HP.

Guess I don't get these kind of thoughts, that an SUV should be "fast". I mean I had a Mustang 5.0 that could do 0-60 in sub 5, but I would never expect something as big as a 4R to do that. On my way home, it's part highway. Then entrance ramp is approx 50ft...and I can be doing close to 60 by the time I am on the highway and am at 70 (speed limit) closely after...and all that without flooring the gas pedal. How fast do you expect an SUV, arguably built mainly for off-roading according to many on these forums, to accelerate?

I have a Touareg to sell you. Way nicer interior, air ride lifts to 11.5", 0-60 in low 7's, zero brake dive. Perfect vehicle for the normal complaints on this forum.


Have fun modding it and the upkeep you will start to deal with after 80k miles.

Will it become / is it now possible to build a unibody SUV that is as strong as BOF and would it then still fail CAFE requirements?

I'm wondering if the eventual extinction of BOF vehicles will make offroad trucks something you sticker like an ATV rather than license for driving, and you tow them on a trailer behind your CUV like a demolition derby car.
