6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

Hey guys,
Just trying to gauge some opinions and hopefully some insider info. I've heard through the grapevine that Toyota hasn't committed to a next generation 4R yet! I'm skeptical on this considering the other markets who utilize this platform (prado, Lexus GX, etc).

Historically the new gen should be out in late 2016 as a 2017 model. Supposedly the new Tacoma will be debuted in January at the NAIAS. I'm hoping its drivetrain etc will maybe give us a hint as to what we might expect from the next 4R if it happens at all. The two tend to share engines, trannies, etc.

Has anyone else heard anything like this? I know specifics are surely not known yet, but will it even exist beyond thus generation?

Its really about supply and demand. As long as there is enough demand Toyota will continue to sell the 4Rs. FJ was discontinued because of poor sale numbers. Less than 10,000 units in 2013 I think. I'm not sure the break even point is for Toyota for the 4Rs. I'm sure that if the demand is more than that number they will continue to build them. 2014s units sold were more than 2013s inspite of some not liking the redesign facia. So I can't imagine Toyota will discontinue the 4Rs as long as the numbers will meet their quota to turn a profit. My 2cents worth.

And apparently the FJ is only leaving North America. I read an article a couple months ago that said they were being introduced in Australia.

I was giving the OP my take if 4rs will still exist beyond the 5th. Me think so.

Ive read that too! Its much the same way how the FJ was reintroduced here in '07 because initial interest was high but the latest numbers have drop too low for Toyota to keep it in their line-up in the US/CAD now. Time will tell if the demand will remain strong in Aussie land. I was just using the FJ to point out that even how great the FJ is that if the demand is not there that it will be discontinued. If the demand for 4rs remains good, Toyota will keep selling it.

We already know the 6th gen will get a stripper pole, choice of diesel or V8, and a solid front axle.

Not as simple as supply and demand in North America. Toyota is lagging the CAFE standards with their current SUV lineup. They'll need to make efficiency changes across the board in the next few years. Perhaps this can be done with refined powertrains for the short term. However, as 2025 creeps up, bigger changes must be in order, and there may not be any room for body on frame SUVs.

I agree! Sales for the 5th gen are decent and much better than the FJ.

Gosh I hope not! With the 4R being basically the last BOF SUV, it's got a monopoly on the market. If Toyota would invest in a new direct injection V6 and a 6 spd tranny, the mileage would be greatly improved helping cafe numbers.

Sales seem decent in my mind but I have no idea if it's profitable enough or not.

You don't have to hear it. If there is going to be a new 4runner then that new model will have been developed several years ago and undergoing testing now. The design cycle is a minimum of five years.

That I understand. The question is......did development for the 6th gen start a few years back and is it still on schedule?

It had more to do with CAFE standards (which is why the GX is being axed for the TX in '16 as the first wave of CAFE hits) than sales. Toyota made a few statements that sales volume didn't mean anything in regards to the FJ, it was always expected to be their little pet project more than anything.

God help us all then, that thing is horrid (it'll probably be a stretched RX platform most likely since that is a unibody trash pile about as CUV as you can while mushroom stamping loyal SUV owners in the face.
