6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

That why there are so many "flex fuel" Chevy Suburbans being sold, even though there are very few gas stations nationwide (most in the corn belt) that actually sell E85 fuel.

I wish the feds and the State of Illinois would give up on that ethanol crap. You got your 10%, let it go. I am tired of trying to make sure the gas in the gas can is no more than 3 months old, seems to me that people having to f--k around with gas unnecessarily is inherently unsafe. Can't imagine what happens with E85.

Of course I can't find it right now and I am too lazy, there were articles in IEEE Spectrum magazine that nothing is really being saved using ethanol because of all the fuel needed to farm the corn, and the fuel/power needed to refine the ethanol. <- Consider that statement unproven, its me spouting off.

..... She would have gone with a ltd 4runner if they got better mileage. It think it's a fair complaint that a 6,500lb Suburban with 100 more hp gets equal or better mileage is a problem for the 4runner. Toyota really needs to address the efficiency of the 4runner at some point.

Funny. Coming from 8 consecutive 'Burbs, esp. during some high gas price times, and now that gas is cheap, picking the replacement on mpg.

I would add another place that they're taking sales from is the Suburban/Tahoe crowd. When a tahoe costs $75k+ and a limited 4runner is $45 - it's a compelling alternative for a lot of buyers.

I would be interested to see the sales figures for Tahoe/Yukons. It sure seems the new 15'+ body style are everywhere in my neck of the woods. I may notice this only because I really want a new Yukon to replace my 14' Limited 4runner. Not that I don't like the 4runner, I just want the 3rd row, towing and gas mileage of the new Yukon. To be honest I dig the looks too! I just can't figure out how so many people can afford the damn things!

What's crazy is that every single year from 2010 to 2015, 4Runner sales have gone up in the US. So there is no way that Toyota isn't going to stick with its current formula. They are getting all the sales from manufactures that turned their SUV's into CUV's.

Normally sales start high and start to trickle down as the line ages, but its crazy that this has the opposite effect. I almost wouldn't be surprised if they stretch the 5th gens out for an extra model year.

What I think is interesting is that when the 2014 5th gen refresh came out everyone said it was ugly as heck, yet 5th gen sales went up in 2014 and 2015 (and by a pretty large margin over the original 5th gen design).

Heck, even I said the refresh was ugly as heck and that they ruined it...A year later the design had really grown on me and I bought one. Go figure.

I was debating waiting for 2017 before I bought my 2016. I do think that they may drop the new 3.5L and 6-speed from the Tacoma into the 4Runner and do another facelift in the coming years. That seems to be how they work. Slow updates / if it ain't broke. Standard dual climate control, keyless start, and LEDs would be great to have on all trims. These items are standard on the entry level Corolla.

Completely onboard with you about E-CRAP! I went 1mi out of my way living in OK to get 100% gasoline and got better fuel economy and range for it (nearly 50mi/tank). Now I'm in one of those half democratic city ruled states where I can find 100% gas, but it's not worth going 20 miles out of my way to get to.

The crew cab is an 8.1L gas engine that gets 8-10mpg at best. It think it was more of a - why trade a suburban for a 4runner that doesn't do anything different? I was surprised they didn't get a highlander. I think the current rav is pretty homely looking. And they got it in tan color.... some choices are hard to explain.

From my experience ( I am no expert or insider by any means), Toyota typically redesigns the 4R every 7 years, so 2017 is up next. The 2017s will likely be available sometime next fall(if they even exist). Looking back, I recall seeing and reading about prototypes running around in the spring-summer prior to launch. So if we are lucky, my guess is that we will begin reading about the 2017 sometime in the next few months....crossing fingers!

with the increase in sales from year to year with the 5th gen why would they rush out the new generation. Maybe it will be the 2017 model, but I would not be surprised if they continued the 5th gen another year.

The decisions for production are made so far in advance that I would guess Toyota is already committed to the new model in '17 by now - if that was the plan. They've already had to have much of the component parts design and such out to vendors and under contract already to start deliveries in mid '16 for a '17 model year. That means the molds are already made. The parts assembly lines are being prepared. And those parts probably don't fit a 5th gen. So - it's too late in the game to delay now if the decision was made 2 years ago to do a 6th gen in '17.

My guess is that it'll be a tacoma style "all new". Basically a minor facelift. Nothing new other than the 6 speed and maybe the 3.5l engine. Let's just hope they do something entirely out of character and update the 4.6L with dual vvti and D4S in about a 4.5L v8 package and put it in a 4runner.

Toyota has 0 passion for anything these days... While other brands accelerate with innovative passionate engineering...(there are some incredible vehicles being offered today) they stall bad and try to continue to bang the reliability drum. The next gen will just be more of the same. Nothing new or innovative. The same anemic 3.5 that is in the Tacoma.... The same mediocre performance. Reliability is good, but it sure ain't exciting.... If they did a v8 I would buy one, but I'm 99% sure they won't.

We can use educated guesses and anticipate subtle exterior and interior changes and possibly the Tacoma power train. I personally think the 4r is too large/heavy for the Tacoma power train but who knows.

I suppose, but they've used the same powertrain for a long time. Granted in the last five years they went dual VVTi with the 4Runner, but it wasn't that big a difference, most of the running gear and drivetrain components remain the same between automatic J120/J150 vehicles.

2016 Toyota Fortuner - standard rear differential lock on all models.

2016 Land Cruiser 70 - manual hubs, standard different lock front/rear. V8 Diesel, manual transmission.

2016 Toyota Prado - Basically a Lexus GX460 but less luxurious.

Unfortunately the people in the US judge a car on how good the cars infotainment system is. Which is very sad.. I wish Toyota would bring some more vehicles like there are in Australia and the rest of the world.

I agree. I have been a Toyota fan for decades, but these days they are falling behind on style, especially in the interior department. I never thought Ford would make Toyota interiors look like Ford interiors. Highlander and Lexus' being the exception. Maybe because of Lexus they want too keep them cheesy.

Based on my somewhat recent purchase, every limited I saw was over $40k, and my Trail I ended up with was over $40. I think its more common than you may think.
