6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

Just looked, 2015 will be the best year since at least 2006. Styling and TRD PRO options I bet, better gas prices as well I am sure. Then again 4 years the Gen 4 sold more and it was so ugly even the assembly kept dropping them :sorry:
 
I had the hardest time deciding between a 2016 Tacoma DCOR (possibly wait for a 17 Taco Pro), and a 16 4Runner Pro. Wife preferred the 4R and she's somewhat impatient. I liked the better towing capacity on the Taco and the fact that it was a newer model with a nice interior, albeit no Softex. Knowing a new 4R was around the corner made it even more difficult to go with the 16 TRD Pro 4R, which we did order. I just hope the new one Is still body on frame.
 
Hi all,
Does anyone know when/if Toyota will let us know if they are going to introduce the 6th gen 4R in 2017 or just keep selling the current model?

No one knows. Someone posted earlier in this thread that if you look at the Chicago Auto Show which is mid February, it says they're showing the 2016 T4R. So no news on the 2017. Toyota should release some information early summer.
 
My dealership friend says they should be coming out in 2017, but he hasn't heard any news. 5th gen sales have been down compared to the 4th gen.

Cut him some slack... fair question, he searched and posted in the relevant thread rather than starting a new one.

Better than the person that replied to like 15 threads "Looks good" in the last couple days.

I personally like the front fascia on the earlier 5th gen better than the one sitting on the lot now. I think looks alone can kill a car design even though everything else is perfeft. I hope I am the only one who thinks this and that others will keep sales numbers high. I would hate to see it cut.
 
At this point an 8-year product cycle looks pretty much like a given. With 4runner and Lexus GX sales higher than ever, it's unlikely they'd be in any hurry to push out a new model.

Last platform was only a 7 year run, but neither 4runner nor GX had a substantial refresh and both had dramatically declining sales in final years. Also, this would stagger the update with the new Land Cruiser & LX by two years, like last time.

It's possibly they could extend it to a 9 year cycle but by then both vehicles will be very long in the tooth and inefficient compared to any of the competition. The atkinson cycle V6 and more efficient transmission are due to arrive in the 4runner and it's likely that a new model will be used to do that.

Regardless of speculation, we likely won't see a new model unveiled until very late in the year prior, September-October, to clear inventory.

I do agree about the "looks good" posts I saw the other day. That was silly, but almost comical. I thought the consensus within this thread was that no one knows for sure. So when I read a question, asking if anyone knows when ... it's like a face palm to me. It was just funnier to me because it was also a first post (as opposed to an introductory first post like "Hello everyone, I'm so and so and I really like 4Runners and yada yada").

Anyway .... I have yet to read a post by someone claiming to be in charge of Toyota's design team and revealing to know exactly what year will be the 6th gen. Until I do, it's all just speculation, in which I'd be happy to partake.

For the record, I am speculating the 6th Gen will be a car platform or some derivation thereof, but not body on frame. I hope I am dead wrong, though.

Personally I agree, but mostly because that is what I have. The general public disagrees based on sales numbers, much higher with the refresh.

What is interesting about the sales numbers, the 4th Gen sales peaked in 2004, and declined every year with the low being in 2009, with less then 20k sold.

The 5th Gen started in 2010 with over 46k sold, and has climbed back to over 97k sold in the US in 2015. The sales numbers for Canada have increased as well.

Wonder if discontinuing the FJ will bring that number up more in the near future.

Wow. I did not see the sales for 2015 when I posted that. Revamped body style or the killed FJ helped the Runner.

Looking at sales figures for FJ it wasn't a strong seller in its last years moving just about 14k for its last 3 years. First year it sold over 50k copies, it went down from there. If it did affect 5th gen 4Runner sales it would have been in the beginning when most people are still paying off the FJ then that could be why Runner sales picked up after mid cycle refresh.

I would speculate that increasing 4R sales are a combination of the mid-cycle refresh, the FJ getting the axe, and GM pricing the Tahoe way up market.
