6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

I have owned 5 different 4runners (2 of which were V8 4th gen models) and the last 2 beng 5th gens. I feel the 4R is underpowered (not by a ton) but could use somewhere in the neighborhood of 290-300hp and 280lb tq or so. I have to wonder that if the Tacoma 3.5L V6 is dropped in, will Toyota maybe throw in the 8spd auto to help make up for the lack of HP and TQ??

I know many folks recently mentioned dependability in regard to over all HP. Look at the Lexus 3.5L V6 making 306hp. I have owned two of them now (2008 IS350 and a 2013 GS350) and they are rock solid. Its obvious Toyota can make a high HP V6 thats dependable. So maybe its possible we will see "tuned" tacoma 3.5L V6 that makes a bit more power.....Just like the 4R received the more advanced 4.0L while the Tacoma did not.

One of the reasons I was ok with the older engine and 5speed transmission in the 4runner is because I felt it wasn't "beta" setup up, like the 9 speed that was released in the new Cherokee (talk about problems!). It may have been an "older" drive-train, but it was a pretty solid one, and I hope to keep the 4runner for a long time.

I'm coming from a 2008 Honda civic, so the 4runner really moves in comparison :zoom:

I think most Japanese automakers have a tendency to let the Europeans work out the "beta testing" phase and jump on board once it's proven profitable and reliable. Think about the gazillion spd transmission and forced induction game. Honda is late to the game on those things, and Toyota basically hasn't even begun the game. That's what gives Hondas and Toyotas their bulletproof reliability...a tried and true formula.

[MENTION=28637]bigbwb[/MENTION] IMO if a 6th Gen 4runner happens, it will share most of its drivetrain with the current Tacoma. Either that, or maybe it will preview the drivetrain refresh for an upcoming mid-cycle Tacoma update

I wish they would just go back to the pre-2000s philosophy where the 4Runner/Tacoma, Pathfinder/Frontier, etc... shared basically everything from the doors forward. It would mean more affordable vehicles.
 
I don't understand why the heck people NEED more power in the 4Runner. I am perfectly happy with it has towed my 16 footer perfectly with more weight than I felt comfortable, it handles outstanding in the snow, has more than enough get up to pass the average semi.

Sounds like we have a lot of driver error I'm my opinion. These people complaining should have bought other vehicles. And then they would complain how it's breaking and not reliable wish they had a 4Runner and lived with the lack of 50 more hp/tq.

Power felt fine when I lived in MD.

However, now that I'm in CO I found that climbing up from Golden to Evergreen and beyond on I-70 West requires constant hammering just to maintain speed with traffic in the left lane. The engine just runs out of steam.

Edit - I've test driven the Explorer Sport and Tahoe on the same run and, yes, they have to work to make the climb, but was is far less dramatic and those engines did not have to work nearly as hard.

This is the exact same note that I was going to place. Going up into the mountains where we lose even more horsepower is one reason I would like to see more power. I am not talking about 400+ horsepower, but the 4.7L V8 in my 2006 Tundra does a nicer job in climbing the passes here in CO with excellent reliability.

The problem is that the 0-60 is really a measure of peak power output. But I almost never use peak power. Rarely would I want to drive around at 5,600rpms. And I think reliability suffers significantly if you expect the engine to run at 5,600rpms for an extended period of time. If you want to race in the desert, the standard practice is to just lock in 3rd gear and scream around at 5000rpms. Try it. It feels like 300hp at your disposal, but that's not how we usually drive.

A 20 year old 1FZ-FE makes more power in the normal driving rpm range of 2-3500rpms than the v6 we have now. It feels more powerful because of that. The older 4.7L v8 was similar. It produced much more power in the normal driving range.

I don't need more peak hp. I want more mid range hp for driveability. It isn't very comfortable running up the passes at 75mph in 3rd gear for 5 miles at redline. It'll get the job done, but it's not ideal.

My real preference would be a 3500lb 4runner. That would solve my complaints pretty easily.

This chart shows really well how a adding hp to the GM LFX 3.6L (green) gives it a higher "hp" number than the 1GR, but also how in actual use it's practically identical from 0-4500rpms. For normal driving you could not tell the difference between a 20yr old Toyota v6 and a new GM 300hp v6. The 1FZ I-6 provides the best power in normal driving rpm ranges, but the lowest peak hp. In normal use it would feel the most powerful. But in a 0-60 race it would fare the worst. If you continue the path of adding more weight and adding more peak hp - you make for a poor driving vehicle, because in the normal rpm range it's worse than the prior generation even though the numbers suggest it's technically "faster".

I think the ideal metric to evaluate would be average hp between 1500 and 4000rpms compared to weight.

More low-end torque makes for a quieter, more refined, and more peaceful drive.

Sounds like we have a lot of driver error I'm my opinion. These people complaining should have bought other vehicles. And then they would complain how it's breaking and not reliable wish they had a 4Runner and lived with the lack of 50 more hp/tq.

The drivetrain in my old '03 V8 4Runner was plenty reliable. The idea that somehow a better, more refined and more powerful drivetrain would be less reliable is simply false.
 
True...reminds me of a recent thread where folks were discussing why Toyotas are durable/reliable. Most people seemed to agree that one of the the reason why they have such longevity is because they are under-powered.

I'm just wondering if there would be a trade-off in durability/reliability if the power/torque did indeed go up...if so would we still want more power?

I know many folks on here are proud of their 200k+ mile cars :o)

I think that of all manufacturers, Toyota takes drivetrain reliability most seriously. We pay the price for that in some regards, but it certainly has its benefits.

Toyota generally tends to run on ten(ish) year powertrain cycles with an update around the 6th year. Looking back ten years...
  • 2GR-FE V6 was introduced and quite frankly blew away the competition at that time. It had more power, better MPG and was very smooth (still is).
  • 1GR-FE, while down on power from the 2GR, was torquey, very smooth and made for a great choice in the Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ and a few other models around the world.
  • 1UR-FE: 5.7L iForce V8 debuted and the only engine that came close was the HEMI at that time, but the iForce V8 put down more usable power in real world use. The version in the LS 460 was, at inception, more powerful than everything but the S550 and had the world's first 8AT.
  • 2GR-FSE in the Lexus IS 350 and GS 350 was quite frankly the best V6 engine in the world for a few years, and is still very solid.

Looking at that list feels a bit like the glory days for Toyota - they were on top of their game in more ways than one. Notably, every single one of those engines has been absolutely rock-solid reliable. However, it's also rather bittersweet as little has changed since 2006/2007.

The 5th gen 4Runner is about the only Toyota model since then that's received a different or updated powertrain. No doubt this was done to "up" the V6 in an effort to keep 4th gen owners who would lament the loss of the V8, but using a 5spd in 2010 was already kind of dated and here we are 6 years later when much of the competition is using 6 or 8 gears.

I also think that Toyota was quite frankly caught with their pants down with regard to turbos. They didn't think forced induction would catch on the way that it has and they're struggling to play catch up. My personal opinion is that they bet too richly on hybrids and hard a hard time with successful mainstream application outside of 4 cylinders.

Right now, it's starting to feel a little like deja vu from 2002-2005 when Toyota had an engine lineup that was universally old.

I'd bet that a new generation of V6s and V8s are going to end up in our hands within the next two years, and I do expect that like 2006 and 2007, they'll be "up" on the competition but my sense is that there will be more of a focus on MPG than horsepower or torque.

Toyota generally likes to test technologies like VVTi, D4S, this Atkinson/Otto cycle programming very extensively before implementing them. That's where we get bitten in the ass. While they take a long time to come, and we're often sitting on our hands or end up buying competing models with more advanced powertrains, once Toyota does release an update, it's usually worth it. Looking at some of Honda's transmission issues or Ford's problems with EcoBoost... I'm happy to drive something more reliable and give up a little power/MPG. At this point with the 4Runner, it's just a matter of "when?"

Last point - and I know I'm rambling here - but the mechanicals that are used in the 4Runner, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, GX and LX are the most durable and reliable parts in the Toyota parts bin. Since they underpin vehicles like the Prado, Fortuner and Hilux around the world - which generally see much harsher use than we have here - reliability and dependability are Toyota's #1 priorities, moreso than power, MPG or stats for bragging rights. Again, we kind of pay a price for that (behind the curve on power/MPG), but it's also hard to find a vehicle that can go for as long as one of these with only routine maintenance and minor repairs.

I don't care about 0-60s, I want more usable power in the middle.

It cracks you up that people want more power and yet you want more towing capacity? Guess what the 4Runner would need for more towing capacity? Here is a hint: the towing capacity on my '03 V8 4Runner was 7300 lbs. The towing capacity for the '03 V6 4Runner was 5,000 lbs. Guess what the difference between the V8 and V6 4Runners was?

As I said previously, my dislike of the V6 4Runner isn't the horsepower. My dislike of the V6 is due two things: 1) lack of torque at low RPM and 2) lack of refinement at high RPM.

Yes, the V6 4Runner is about as fast 0-60 as my old 4Runner. But to get that acceleration out of the V6, you have to use high RPMs and at high RPMs the V6 is simply loud and coarse. Toyota knows how to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness when they want to (witness the Lexus lineup), but they just haven't put that work into the V6 4Runner.

Yes, I did buy a different vehicle as a result -- a 2013 Landcruiser. 380 hp, 400 ft-lbs of torque. Plenty of performance but also a lot of scoot off the line with no drama, just how I like it. Fuel economy is, of course, epically bad, but I expected that.
 
Toyota already has proven engines and transmissions that would improve power in the 4R. The 4.6l V8 used in the 4R's cousin, the Lexus GX, is a good example.

It's not that they can't give the 4R more power, they choose not to.

While that V8 is buttery smooth and rich with low end torque, 301hp and 325lb-ft of torque is sorely outdated at this point. I'd hope that a next generation V6 could match those numbers with better MPG.

Agree with your last point. Hell, even though I think the take rate on a 4Runner with the 5.7L V8 would be very low, I think they should have offered it.

Indeed.

Even Toyota themselves has been using a 6-speed transmission in other vehicles for quite a few years. The Land Cruiser got a 6-speed automatic in 2008, and just went to an 8-speed in 2016. The Lexus GX 460 got a 6-speed automatic in 2010.

And yet here we are with the 2016 4Runner still using that old 5-speed.
 
The gearing is what's killing our perception of performance, but IMO 4.56 is just too low for a stock 4runner. 4.10 or maybe 4.30 gearing would do wonders for performance.


Having just regeared to 4.56 I think you're on the money with this comment. The 4.10 would be a good compromise for the general population. Thrown in an updated transmission and I think it would be a winning combination.

I disagree that the 4.56 is too low at least for my purposes. My tires are undersized for them now, but they will feel great when I get up to the 34s (or 35s if I can get the stones to mod the fenders). My only gripe is the mileage hit at highway speeds. However, I knew it would happen before I made the change.

I'd personally love to have the current motor, 4.56s, and one more gear in the transmission to help the highway mileage. I've got two out of three though which isn't bad :-)

(Note: Where I am in Texas, we have 80-85 mph speed limits on many of the highways I drive regularly. It's really just 75+ where the mileage takes a huge hit.)

How much MPG difference have you noticed? I thought about doing a highway section in 4th gear to get an idea of the result, but I haven't done it yet. The 6 speed would be great. The 8 speed would solve the issue on both ends as it has a 25% lower first gear too.

Multiple attributes make up towing capacity. The 1GR-FE, which is in the 4runner, was also in the Tacoma up until 2015. The Tacoma, with that engine, had a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs when properly equipped. For whatever reason, Toyota engineers or bean counters didn't feel the need to offer the option on the 4Runner. The V6 GC, which is a similarly sized and powered vehicle, has a towing capacity of 6,200 lbs when properly equipped.

I drove up to Dallas from Copperas Cove Monday morning...got passed by several vehicles. Wondered if I was going that slow or what...looked down I was at 90mph. Gotta love that Monday morning commute.

Have to agree, it's acceptable in the 4th gen since even then it still ended up being one of the better sub-5.0L cast iron/Aluminum V8s for a truck/SUV. But we should be seeing these types of numbers in a V6 at this point.
 
I think developing comparable power output to the v8 *at low rpms* is all but impossible in a small displacement engine without boost. It's just a limit of displacement. You could get more tq but you'd need longer stroke and smaller bore and that doesn't make the high rpm power you need to get to the 300hp figure that sells cars. Or you can make high rpm hp and have less tq. Boost or larger displacement - basically the same thing - is what you need for more power and torque.
 
And yet here we are with the 2016 4Runner still using that old 5-speed.

The 5 spd is OK (albeit barely) — mostly because it's tougher than a yak's forehead. At 120 km/h, however, I'm right around 2,000 rpm, which isn't horrible; but a sixth gear would drop it to 1,300-1,500 rpm, thus calming the cabin that much more and probably bring another 10 per cent gain in fuel economy at highway speeds. But I'll take durability over economy any day.

Many of the eight and nine speeds also hunt too much, and they've all had tons of problems. There's also a slight delay when you punch it with most of these, as the trans has to jump from 8th or 9th to third (Porsche's PDK being the exception). The 2016 Honda Pilot 9 spd is has to be woken from a nap when you floor it.

Regardless, the 5 will be gone in the next gen as fuel econ stds force Toyota to make gains in the 4R. Of course the 6 in the GX (as well as its V8) is a simple, off-the-shelf proven solution. Don't be surprised if the Limited gets both, and a higher trim level gets introduced, called the Platinum to replace the GX. ;]
