6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

So, if they don't announce anything by the chicago auto show I will have to assume they won't update the model next year.

I'm not sure I would make that assumption. Toyota plays its cards close to the vest and often announces late.

I do not think that is correct logic… 5th gen 4runner was introduced in the fall of 2009 @ Texas State Fair; Until that point no one had any idea if 5th gen will exist… of what it would look like…

I know that with 100% certainty, as I was waiting for 5-th gen to replace my 1996 4Runner and specifically went to Texas State fair to see the 5th gen in person... no other info (pictures, specs, etc.) was available anywhere until the first day of the State fair…

Not exactly...there were spy photos of the 5th gen floating around months before the official intro.

For example (July 2009): 2010 Toyota 4Runner Loses V-8, Gets Base Four-Cylinder Option | Car and Driver Blog

There were others...I still remember the grumbling around the mast antenna and non-locking fuel door, which were first spotted in the spy photos.
 
I just find the 5th gen to be a perfect design. I love the exterior design, the interior is more truck like and very functional. I had a 4th gen and while a nice vehicle I greatly prefer the 5th gen. I have had many vehicles but never as perfect as the 5th gen. I plan on keeping my trail until it falls off the wheels.

Agree, but not 100%... as I remember seeing those spy photos that floated on the internet (around two month before Texas State fair)… but they did not represented lot of truthful info about 5th gen… that specific photo was discussed on this forum… based on that (and other similar photos a lot of people thought the new 4Runner is going to look like a Sequoia (which was\is not the case)… 4 cylinder option sounded good… (because of high gas prices at that time) but no one knew how gutless that setup would be and that Toyota would drop it very soon for obvious reasons…

Also, in many people point of view on this forum (including myself) that spy photo actually looked better than 5th gen of SR5 and limited models until they were actually reveled… (Trail was\is good looking runner)

My point was that it was no exact info or pictures of 5th gen of 4Runner until it was actually revealed on Texas State fare in September of 2009 .

It really is the perfect size. I'd like to see them keep the dimensions the same, make it lighter and more rigid, and give it the LC 8 speed.

CAFE could be the fly in the ointment, though. Fuel economy targets are based on footprint and the 4Runner either needs to get much better fuel economy or cast a bigger shadow with moderate gains for the next gen. I wouldn't mind better fuel economy, but not at the detriment of performance. I don't want a slow diesel and I don't want a bigger SUV.

The size is perfect. Put the center diff in everything 4WD. 6 or 7 speeds, 8 is too much. Beef up the V6 Hp or 4.6 V8. Pr tailgate. Bigger information screen. Better turning radius. Everything else for me is cool to stay the same. I like the look in and out the way it is.

I hope they don't go with a more swept back aerodynamic look. I like the more muscular upright design of the 5th gen. More outdoors, manly like appearance.

I too have heard the same. What this means is we will have the same for at least two more years and possibly more. I do suspect they might give us a different color or a "Special Edition" or optional wheels next year.

From what I (take with a grain of salt but it came from someone who should know these things) heard:

1. New design completed with exception of electronics. Just waiting.
2. Sales still very strong on existing units.
3. Low fuel prices for next year(s)
4. Projections expect strong sales to continue next year.

But where else are we going to speculate wildly?? It's all nicely contained right now, god knows what will happen if everyone is released back in to the wild.

Agreed!!! I actually had a 97Runner for 16 years because while it was a great truck, it just was lacking in interior space and HP of course. Personally the 4th gen was still not enough for me to make the move so kept hanging in there as the truck ran great. Then as soon as I saw the 5th come out I waited till 2011 because I never buy the first year of a new model. That's just the way I am and I love the size of the 5th gen. Now I just hope my 11 will be just as reliable as my 97 was ???
 
Greg, Quentin is correct, but I retract what I said. The thread is civil (!), harmless, it's contained, it's mildly interesting, and I don't have to read it if I don't want to.

Speculation can be fun.

If this thread gets closed a new one will pop up within a week or so. If a new one pops up now it can simply be merged here.
