6th gen 2017 4R, will it exist?

I'm hoping 2017 will add a couple nice things to the 4Runner, so I'll hold off until then.

2017 model year will be unchanged. Earliest chance for a redesign is 2018.

4Runner has less flash and features than others, but that is also what appeals to many. The 4Runner demonstrates the classic KISS principal, which is why it is so bulletproof, reliable, and desirable in resale value even out of warranty.

I'm having a tough time with this, too. I currently drive a 2004 4Runner Limited and would like to buy a new truck this year. I like the 4Runner, but I feel that it lacks some technology for a $43k truck. The Durango looks nice, but yeah, I'm just not sure about the durability. The Pilot has some really nice features, but I'm not sure about driving around town in one of those. :pound:

Subscribing here, hopefully we hear about the 2017 soon.

Used GX460 should have most everything you're looking for in the same price range.
Similarly a highlander or RX350 have most tech options you'd want. We have an RX350 and it has a lot of things I'd like. Only 2 are probably must haves in my next vehicle:

Auto headlights and smart key in a trail edition. Or KDSS on a limited. Either would make me happy. Otherwise the interior is pretty good IMO. The 4runner is every bit as quiet as the Lexus before you put big aggressive tread tires on it. Sure it doesn't have radar cruise control, heated steering wheel, headlights that turn and self level and auto-bright/dim, or auto wipers. All that stuff I can live without. It's nice, but it's mostly fluff to me.

so you don't think there any chance for even HID headlights or maybe some more LEDs in 2017? I'm assuming some of the safety stuff like collision warning, lane departure warning, etc would be a pretty major change and not probably for 2017.

Not likely. Maybe a new color.

yeah, bummer. I'm not sure I can wait until 2018, so will have to decide what's more important.

When does Toyota generally officially release new model year info?

What would be awesome is if the '16 TRD Pro switched over to the Fox internal bypass shocks like the Taco. That's unobtanium as far as I know. I don't think we can buy internal bypass shocks in any form that I know of for the front coilovers right now.

With a 2004, you can definitely wait till 2018. But I like many never buy the first model year of a redesign. I had my 97 (16 years) and waited and loved when the 2010 4R came out but bought a 11. And I have my 4r to my daughter who drove it for 2 years.

Unlikely. That might have been possible for a mid-model refresh, but the refresh already took place in 2014.

I too was a little annoyed by the lack of tech (lane departure, blind spot, auto- braking) which is standard in a lot of other vehicles - but for me personally I could not get comfortable with the build quality of anything else out there. After owning for a bit now, I don't ever think about the technology that I don't have. But on a few occasions I've been places and seen accidents that made me think about how thankful I am to have this.

I test drove the GX 460 three times. The drivetrain was good. The interior appointments looked nice. Unfortunately, I found the driver's seat to be uncomfortable. I also didn't like the side-hinged door. And the third-row seat takes up a huge amount of cargo capacity. The 4th Gen 4Runner has 70 cu ft behind the front row. The 5th gen has 80 cu ft. The GX 460 has only 60 cu ft behind the front row. It was a big issue for me.

I thought that a heated steering wheel wouldn't be a big deal. But now that I purchased a vehicle with a heated steering wheel (2013 Land Cruiser), I have to say that I love it.

My headlights don't self level, but they can be lowered. They don't swivel -- I would really like that if they did. As I get older, the more light the better. The auto wipers on my LC are relatively poor. The sensor just doesn't do a good job.

In my experience, the 5th Gen 4Runner is not as quiet as the GX, particularly when you push the engine.

My advice: go big or go home. Get a used LC.

I think I want to stay around 45k for my next vehicle. Looking at a used LC, looks like you are in the 2011 range with 80k miles for that price. I think for something THAT "used", I'd have to just go for the new 4Runner and give up some of the tech.

I just want the 4.6, otherwise I'm perfectly happy.

Driving up and down I-70 every day makes me jealous of my brother's Sierra Denali 6.2 V8 and the 18.5 MPG he gets.

270>240. Power and torque are not interchangable.

I'll grant you that diesel is more efficient, though.

I suppose I should have specified torque. The ecodiesel's 420 lb-ft absolutely dwarfs the 4runners 278, both on paper and in driving feel. You're right though, the 4Runner is the faster vehicle, but dont underestimate how enjoyable 420 lb-ft is to drive.

I was in the same boat as you. As someone who already owned a 5th gen I was really hoping for a 2017 update. After more or less confirming that there would be no 2017 update I decided to go ahead anyway. If there's a 2018 update maybe I'll look at trading in on 2019, depending on how significant the changes are.

Land Cruisers are expensive, no doubt, and I can understand the desire to stay at $45k. If the 4Runner had a better powertrain, I would have gotten a new one. I drove the 2015 4Runner three times, but I just couldn't get past the powertrain. YMMV.

I was looking at a new GX 460 and the bottom trim level doesn't have much equipment. I would have at least added the Premium Package -- it still didn't have everything I wanted but was closer. The problem was that by that point I was into used Land Cruiser money.

I found a used 2013 Land Cruiser at a Lexus dealer, test drove it, and that was all she wrote. I got a 2-year-old, CPO 2013 with less than 30k miles. It had more of the toys I wanted, all the room I wanted, more comfortable seats, more power, better angles and a significantly smaller turning circle than the GX 460.

As expected, fuel economy is mildly frightening.

A lot of this is personal preference but I cannot help but note that you didn't say how much more you paid for the Land Cruiser than you would have a new 4runner?

What was the cost differential?

If it were the same price then that is a screaming good deal. If not then the 30k miles used, the shortened warranty period and the additional cost is what you paid for the positive attributes you listed. Still might be worth it [obviously was to you] but that is where opinion and preference impact.

I think most of us would take a land cruiser over a 4runner if price was not a issue

Between the 4Runner and Land Cruiser, price is certainly one thing and MPG is not far off in the same vein. Being able to get close to 20mpg on the highway with the 4Runner really ads up when you consider 15mpg on a Land Cruiser.

I am also a single guy and don't need three rows, or to try to park something that big when I live in a large city.

The features I absolutely need for the 6th Gen 4Runner are:
- 3-stage turn signals
- Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA
- At least a 6 speed automatic, if not 8

To go one step beyond that, if they'd make JBL audio an option on the Trail Premium, then that would keep me from having to buy a Limited.

HID would be nice but you can go aftermarket for $200, so that's not a big deal. LED DRLs are cool, but purely cosmetic. I am sure that smart key will probably be standard on SR5P and TrailP, if not all models.

In all seriousness, Toyota could have done a better job with updates through the 4Runner's life cycle, but with how well they've been selling, not much of a business case either.

Maybe just go with an SR5 4x4. You can get one for almost $10K less than the limited. Get some Wet Okole seat covers, put in an aftermarket sound system, get some aftermarket wheels / tires and you are way better off IMO. I don't miss any of the limited options and I don't like all the chrome.

The real problem I have is this. It has a 5.7L v8, 6spd, nicer interior, more features across the board and costs about $45k. Makes the 4runner look pretty expensive for what you're getting.

Are you talking about a used GX and comparing to a new Limited T4R?

The new GX460 MSRP is $50,780 and it has a 4.6 L V8.

Either way I agree with you that the Limited T4R is overpriced. But the SR5 and Trail editions are not IMO.

From what I've seen of the new Tacoma, Toyota better just stick with the 5th gen 4runner because if the Tacoma is the best they can muster, the brand has lost its way.

Agreed, I really liked the last model of Taco's but these new ones... :puke:
absolutely terrible.
