86' 4runner gets VooDoo'd

Here are the mounts/feet for the roof rack. Nothing fancy, but they work.

Nice. Looks like you got rid of the hidden fasteners? I detest those. I have started to replace mine with plastic expansion nuts as I touch each section. Already did it to my grille fasteners.

Do you ever rest your arm on the window sill while driving? The vinyl will protect the paint and ultimately the metal from salt from our sweat that will promote rust.

Yeah I had to do without the little plastic fasteners. I just used self tapping 1/2 inch screws. I kind of like the look. I'm about to apply some marine varnish. I will post up in a new thread to show them off.

One of the things my wife wanted done before we left on our trip was getting the windows tinted. I was able to get that done earlier this week, and am very pleased with the outcome. The looks are improved and should provide a function as well.

so your saying that you just happened to have a pair of blue balls of the golf variety laying around?

this picture is so misleading if it wasnt for the wheel block i would have though you were going down hill lol

That bare metal strip should never have been covered in vinyl!

i am currently in new mexico and owning a gen 2 currently with no door panel due to the previous owner having ripped it off i actually took the upper portion (window trip and hung it back on the door because i would burn my arm...

Thanks, I appreciate it!

We made the 5,989 mile trip, and I'd like to say with no issues, but I did have a snag. I had been disapointed with the power and fuel economy on the new engine, and head since I first installed it, but just blew it off as expecting too much. We left out from Winston Salem on a Friday afternoon around 4pm heading West. By the time we had gotten to Arkansas, the 4runner was not idling well, then by Oklahoma it wouldn't idle below 2k rpms. I stopped in OK City and checked all the basics, and they checked good. We continued on until in Amarillo TX, it wouldn't restart. :wtf: Finally got it started back, and
limped it to Gallup NM where we rested from 5AM to 9AM. We had our fingers crossed as we drove North to Moab where we had been planning on spending a few days soaking up the gorgeous scenery while wheeling. By this point, the starter could no longer spin the motor fast enough for it to fire, so it was getting the push-rope treatment whenever we stopped.

Moab was everything we expected, and more. It was gorgeous, fun, and freaking hot. The temps were a cool 105 during the days.

I limped it through White Rim Trail, and continued on to Colorado. At this point, I knew it was low on compression, but was afraid there was some other reason. I had thoughts of bad ecu, bad, injectors, ...... Some reason
for a failure on a brand new OEM Toyota short block, or a new Engnbldr head.
While in Ouray, CO we were very fortunate to have other friends there we could ride with on the trails. During our first scheduled trail run, we again were fortunate enough for the leader to be the owner of Safari Ltd in Grand Junction CO. He was awesome enough to stop by and check behind me on the 4runner to make sure everything was as I envisioned in my head. Yep, no compression, but not from a vehiclular issue such as ecm or otherwise. I had already called and spoken with Engnbldr, and was told I would need to ship the head back for it to be inspected, repaired, and then shipped back to me, but they had no new heads available for purchase, or exchange. This put me in a bind, as I was 2500 miles, and another week from my vacation being over.
Colin in Safari's parts dept got me a new remanufactured head inbound and in hand a day faster than I expected. I arrived at Safari knowing they had a full work load, and then some, and wouldn't be able to get to me for a day or so. The owner once again being an awesome guy, offered to let me use his parking lot for the cylinder head swap. I took him up on it, and had it running that afternoon. After checking it over for leaks, timing etc, it was time to hit the road again. We picked our family's and broke camp heading North on to
Yellowstone National Forest.

to be continued...

Since the cylinder head install in the parking lot of Safari Ltd, the 4runner makes more power, and gets better fuel mileage. I've since then(actually within about 2 weeks of install)put over 4k miles on it, and I couldn't be happier. Engnbldr called me after they recieved the head back, and verifed
that the intake valves weren't sealing. Their ideas on why they didn't seal are different from mine, but they took care of it either way.

I also ended up purchasing an FJ Cruiser about a week ago. I had been eyeing them for a while(ok, since they launched in 06), but just hadn't found one at a deal I couldn't pass up. This one was traded in at my dealership, and already had an OME lift, but needed some tires, so I swapped the wheels and tires from my 4runner to go on it, and added the deflector for the roof rack given to me by my friend who owns the yellow fj in the previous pics.

I bought the FJ with the intention of giving my 4runner a semi-retirement, and giving it sunny day convertible duty. I typically get a project, and do almost everything that can be done to it, then loose interest because I can't do much more, then sell it. I'm really trying to fight that urge, as once I do it, I usually regret it.

Bummer on the head going during vacation! Thats awesome you were able to get it fixed on the road!

Nice FJ too!

Ask and you shall receive!! Damn!

Can I get some larger sizes of some of those pics? Great stuff.

Thats a crazy trip though wow, glad you made it back. Please do not sell it. Would be the mistake of a lifetime!

I think sooner or later we all get that pull to move on from a project once its reached a certain point. Especially when other options are more modern, ride better, more reliable and safer. Family also is a big influence. Either way you go, thank you for saving and really showcasing the old beauty. If you don't keep her, it'll make someone else very happy. I'm just surprised you're not more inclined to the FJ/FJZ80.

On a side note, can you let me know how much the retro vinyl decals set you back? I'm almost finished with my respray and trying to decide between something similar or going in a different direction.

Thanks! It would be hard to see it go. I don't have a clue how much time i've
got in it, let alone money, and memories.

I've got some of the pics loaded on my flickr account:

I've actually tried to buy a couple different 80s over the past year after the owner's mentioned wanting to sell them. They both still have them, and never gave me a price. One was a supercharged 97 LX450.

On the decals, I had a local vinyl shop I deal with make them for me. They're satin 3m clear over 3m black, and cost $300 total installed. You can buy the reproductions online for less, but not in black, and not installed.

I would of assumed you would be shopping at Modern Toyota, in Winston, and not all the way down here at MidState Toyota in Asheboro. In most cases, people off the street can come in and buy something for less than I can(especially if we're talking new). A random Joe off the street can haggle and negotiate, where I pay a set amount over cost + doc fees etc. If I want it, I pay what they ask, or don't get it.
