90runner died and wont start

It's not normal. Do you have the idler pulley adjusted all the way to the right and still loose? The spring should just hold it together while you push the loosened idler pulley to the right with a 2x4 piece of wood.

i realized right after i posted what my problem was. I didn't get to see what it looked like when it was because it had snapped but as soon as i looked for a pic i saw that i wasnt on the top guide right:p

ah okay so i have them completely backwards haha. and i thought i had it. but i think my timing is off still. i don't think i set it at TDC correct. could you thoroughly explain how to do that? my crankshaft doesn't have any markings. on the #1 cover it does have numbers on it i cant remember which. i put everything together and tried to start it and it tried but puttered. that could be from my spark plugs being backwards tho. i have them set as 123 drivers side and 456 passenger

No, it's Passenger side 123 - Drivers side - 456, front to back

okay i'm gonna go switch them in a few minutes. but about the timing, I didn't change much because i really didn't understand what i was doing. I was kinda hoping it would just be on the right timing lol

Ok. The crank pulley has a timing mark on it, and the plate that has a jagged edge is on the right side at 2 o;clock. There are numbers on that plate, where the timing mark on the pulley should be at zero. Now, pull the #1 spark plug (passenger side front plug), and use a pencil, or screwdriver to confirm that that piston is all the way up to the top. If it is not , you need to turn the crank clockwise one full revolution to zero again. Then check again to make sure piston #1 is at top. Now, your at top dead center. Both cam pulleys at top have a mark on them, and they should be up at 12 o'clock. You should see a mark at top behind each pulley. Now, turn the crank clockwise 2 full cycles, and check all three marks again. Let me know how it goes. Cheers, Dave

when i looked at the crankshaft pully(circular object that holds 2 belts) I didn't see a timing mark but i will check again thoroughly in the morning. on the cam pulleys there was a little notch that looked like someone put there. also on the right cam pulley there was a arrow but not on the left cam pulley. on the crankshaft pulley there is also an extra pulley for the power steering i think that i didn't see marks on. if im confusing you im sorry. on the crank pulley there is 3 belt guides if you will one comes off easy the other 2 are the ones i needed the puller for. which one of those would have the mark on it?

edit: if this sounds like an idiot post don't pay attention. i have been working on it since noon today so about 11 hours of work and im wore out. so i could be missing something i will check it more thoroughly in the a.m

No worries, you'll get through this. The crankshaft pulley should have a mark on the outer edge, closest to the block, it's the mark you want to go by with a timing light after you get her running. You still have the upper cover off to check all this, right? Sleep on it, and it will all make sense in the morning. just make sure you read all my notes again.

okay i'll check it again in the a.m and let you know how it goes. I still have pretty much everything off all i did was put the crankshaft pulley back on and put the belts on to see if it would crank but it puttered ha. but easy to take off again. but yeah i'll let ya know how it goes. again thank you very much for this help you've gave me. without me i'd be screwed 300-900 bucks haha

so i think i had it at TDC. I put a pencil in and turned it tell it was at the very top and was on the 0. i put spark plug back in and the wires on. tried to start it, it backfired at first then nothing. i don't have the air filter hooked up to the top of the motor either. would that be the problem?

Air filter should not matter. Now that you know it's at top dead center, with the mark on crankshaft on the jagged plates # zero, where are the marks on both camshaft pulleys at? They should both be at twelve o'clock. Before you fire it up, loosen the distributor hold down clamp so you can turn it when it starts, to adjust it to the proper timing (which I believe is 5 degrees before tdc.

I don't think they are at 12 o clock. how do i turn them? do i need to loosen the bolt? and the distributor hold down clamp? meaning where i can adjust the tightness of the distributor belt?

the left cam pulley is at about 6 o'clock and the right cam pulley is at about 4 o'clock

You need to take the belt off, but not the lower crank pulley or cover. First, loosen the idler pulley bolt, and spring if you must, slide belt off the top two pulleys. With a ratchet or wrench, turn each cam pulley clockwise until mark on pulley is at top. You should see a mark behind the pulley at top. Once both are where they need to be, take the right side of belt, between crank and right cam pulley, keeping it as tight as you can and pull it over the right cam pulley, then bring it under center pulley, then over left cam pulley, then down behind idler pulley. Make sure at this point that all marks are where they need to be, push the idler pulley to the right with a block of wood to tighten belt, then tighten bolt on idler pulley. Let me know when that is done. Do Not Start Yet.

Does this help? This is a attachment from Autozone.

done. would it have messed something up that i tried to start it before?

Maybe, but let's hope not. Now, you must turn the crank clockwise, with your ratchet on crank bolt, 2 full revolutions, and check all marks again. If they are off, make them right, and do the 2 full revolutions again, and they should be right now. Do you have a timing light handy? If not, rent one from Autozone before you set the timing to 5 before top dead center. ( I believe that is the #, double check that).

i dont have a timing light currently. i have 2 tools rented from autozone right now and that was all my money. my truck not working is keeping me going to work thats why im so desperate to get it started. if i can get it to atleast start i can drive to autozone and return them and rent a timing light

okay i set them. turned it 2 full rotations to the left starting at 0 with it at TDC and they match up

That will work. After you get it to run, you may have to adjust your timing by ear. Your distributor may be close already, though you have a new belt now that is not stretched like the old one. So, you may move it one way or the other to see where it runs best until you get a timing light. Or, I like to use a vacuum guage to get my best vacuum. Fire it up, and see how she runs.

okay now that they are set right what do i do about the distributor cap again? or start it now?

Do the contact look bad inside? You may need a new one. Even with this cap, it ran until the belt broke right? Sounds to me that the belt was the problem. I'm sure you could use a new cap, but for now it should run. Dave
