94 4 runner 3.0 temp gauge

i just got done doing a head job on this 4 runner replaced waterpump t stat rad. etc... bled the cooling system with air lift the temp needle pegs out but the top of radiator measures 240 deg. and the lower hose 135 deg. no boiling or steam but i am worried and dont know if it could be the gauge or something i did wrong, what is a safe temp i should be at and how would i know if it is really overheating.??????
