94 4runner 2wd 3.0, auto front hub nut

[944runner]

What size is the hub nut on the front hub? Also, is the star - lock washer a dealer item, I cannot find it anywhere?

Did a search and nothing came back, visited all the local parts stores with no luck on either item. I am in the middle of rotors, bearings, brakes on our 94 and found the passenger side without a lock washer. I'm not going back without one.

If it's the same as the 4wd then the lock nut is 54mm, and you need a special socket to remove it. I ordered mine online from a place in N.C. for about $18.

i took a hardened chisel and made a notch near one of the points and then taped the notch at the right angle to spin the nut loose

i would recommend using the right tool for the job, nut if yours are rounded off like mine are then the chisel method may be your best option

The thing with the nut is that while it's rather large, it has a pretty low level of torque so it shouldn't be too tough to get off. If you do use the chisel method, you will need to figure a way to get it back on while attaining the proper torque...this may be difficult with a chisel.

I don't know what else you use it for on the truck, but the locknut isn't very tight on there. The socket shouldn't wear out, considering I've only used mine once and probably wont use it again for a while.

They only require 8lbs.... My stamped steel one is about 5 years old. Works great every time.

Honestly, I could've loosened the nut without the wrench attached. It's just an awkward shape/size that you need the socket to grip it.

Solid front axle the torque on the nut is 70 ft/lb.
And I wheel hard so there's maintainance required.
The stamped one didn't last a year.

I always throught it was 8, but I just do it by feel.

EDIT: Found this

The preload on the outer bearing has to be set. To do so, using either a 54mm or 2 1/8" socket and a torque wrench, torque the adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs. After setting it to this torque, spin the rotor/hub assembly each direction several times, then back off on the adjusting nut until you can turn it by hand. Then set the torque wrench to 18 ft. lbs. and torque the adjusting nut.
