95 Manual Hubs

Hi all,
I am looking into manual hubs for my 95 4runner, has any one done this before? How hard was it really? cause most ppl talking to seem to think its pretty simple.

1. Are we talking a 2nd gen 4runner that they stopped producing the first of 95, or are we talking the first year 3rd gen, that came out mid 1995?

2. Yes. It is very easy. There are different options. You can go OEM with a ASAIN hub that was factory option on 4runners, or you can get a WARN manual hub kit.

Both are very easy to do. I went WARN and had 0 issues. People have different opinions as to which hub to use, but the actual process to switch to the manual is simple.

It is really quite simple. If I remember correct, the actual kit from WARN had instructions. Also, any repair manual for your truck (haynes, Chilton's) will have good directions. '


The only tricky part is the getting the CONE WASHERS to come out. I learned that a rubber mallet, that you use to smack the **** out of the center; will force at LEAST one of those damn things out. Once you get one, it gets easier. That was honestly the one part of the entire process that was irritating.

If I were you, I would go ahead and repack your wheel bearings. When I changed mine out, you could tell the grease was shot. Original and broken down. Pick up a bearing packer (5 bucks, autozone) and some good grease and while you have the hubs off, relube the hub and bearings for good measure.
 
The factory hubs are stronger than the warns and can be found in a junkyard. But with the Warns, you dont have cone washers to deal with.

But not have the cone washers is one of the Warn hub weaknesses.
They can vibrate loose over time.
 
It doesn't defeat anything. I will help clear some stuff up.

The 2nd gen 4 runners came with 2 factory options. 1. Manual hubs. Like you are looking to install.

2. FULL/ ALWAYS engaged hubs. The point of lock/unlock occurred transfer case side. Make sense? The Wheel hub WAS ALWAYS locked to the wheel shaft.

The reason for this? The 1st gen 4 runners came with an AUTO hub. What was an auto hub? It was a spring/clutch driven hub center that would connect/disconnect the wheel to the shaft. It was inside of the wheel hub. They sucked. Broke and were unreliable.
They sucked. Seriously, they sucked. The springs would wear out, would break.. blah blah blah. A buddy had one and by the end of the runners life; one hub would lock and the other wouldn't. They sucked. Toyota stopped using them for obvious reasons.

So. You are not defeating ADD. You are simply installing a manual hub that can disconnect the wheel from the wheel side shaft. Make sense? I have heard this will save you some MPG due to decreased resistance, but what it really gets you is LESS wear and TEAR on your front components.

No need to run them, if you are not in fwd.

The ADD will continue to operate as Normal. When you click 4x4, the front Diff will link up and engage the diff side of the shaft. If you don't lock your hubs; nothing will happen. The front diff will be turning the front shafts, but since you have not locked the hubs to the wheels.. it won't do anything.

If you google you'll find info on defeating the ADD. In addition to adding manual or auto hubs, it involves replacing the ADD section of the front axle with the older non-ADD part.
 
I did the swap in my 92 with oem aisin hubs out of my old 88 4runner, very easy install.
They look good with a cleaning and fresh paint job :bigok:
 
Aisan hubs

When I did mine - everyone around here in Vancouver said not to go WARN because they are made in China now and will eventually crack. So I got a set of used Aisan hubs. So Far So Good.

Does anyone have a good link to purchase the aisin hubs, I'm having a hard time finding a good selecion of sellers

How do you know the difference between first of 95 and mid 95? VIN number?
 
Mine came from first gen

My understanding is the first gen hubs are the ones to have. Mine came from a 1989 4runner. (made in japan)
