I'm new to this forum. I'm sure there is info on this site regarding R&R of the latch handle on the rear of the lift gate. Either the mechanism is broke or the lock will not unlock. I need to take it apart and findout. Just wondered if anyone else had the problem or could direct me to a link.

I helped a buddy with the same problem not long ago. You're going to have to remove the plastic panel on the inside of the hatch. You first have to remove the screw underneath the little plastic piece that's on the strap. Then just start working the plastic panel off. Some better have better luck starting from the top corner and others have better from a bottom corner. Just whatever works for you. Some have used a crowbar as well. Once you get the panel off you will see the inside of the hatch and 2 metal panels. Remove the bolts for the longer panel and now you're inside. Then it's just a matter of diagnosing why the lock mechanism won't release. It's pretty easy once you get in the back of your 4runner and see what I'm talking about.

I had the same problem when i got mine. i just shot some turbine oil in the mechanism, tried the latch a fews times and its started working perfect and hasnt acted up since.

I'm a moron. took me forever to figure out I had a reply to my original posting.
Any rate, I got the plastic cover off and the metal access cover. I see that the key lock cylinder is loose, The ears on the lock cylinder are intact, but where it threads into the plastic license plate holder is broke. I'll take off the plastic frame next. I don't know if I can repair that or not. I have had limited success epoxying plastic back together. Thanks again for your reply. I'll let you know how it works out.
