99' Head Unit install questions.

Hey all,

I recently got a 99' SR5 from my mother, its currently in the shop getting all new gaskets(oil pan, rear main seal, valve cover) so I don't have it around to check it out. My question is regarding installing a after market head unit, the size of the stock head unit looks like the same size as an after market one(mine doesn't have a CD player, cassette/radio only)

Do you need new brackets and a dash kit? or will the stock brackets fit on an after market head unit?

I believe the terminology is "Single DIN" that is referring to the size of opening that the radio fills. If you have a pocket or space below or above your existing radio then you have an existing "Single DIN" head unit.

SO your options are to go Double DIN or Single DIN again. Note that there is likely a factory amp behind the dash-depending on who you talk to that thing is a Piece of Crap or the best audio gear out there... opinions vary.

My suggestion would be to take your Runner to a qualified aftermarket seller and pay the few dollars they charge to do a proper install. No offense to your potential abilities sir, but the folks who do this all day for a living know what they are doing and should of course guarantee their work.

Be sure to get back whatever is removed and some member on this forum may even be hoping to get back to "stock" and would pay you some $$ for your old gear.

A good quality Internet supplier is Crutchfield and they will provide you with detailed instructions should you buy from them and attempt install on your own. You perhaps can save a few dollars in this manner if that is important to you after the money spent on your engine maintenance upkeep.

In theory your stock brackets will remove from the old head unit and be used to mount your new head unit. A dash kit typically may include the previously mentioned "pocket"-and a wiring harness jumper to connect to the Toyota specific harness.
