A possible solution to leaking axle seals

Message to mtbtim:
Hey big guy, posting videos with pictures of a penis flashing isnt funny. Its sleezy and low class on family friendly forum. Take your videos off my thread. The mods aught to review your membership. And enough of the homo jokes.

Note to self, Dr Coffee has no sense of humor. Sorry we offended you. I thought you'd be impressed somebody made a helpful video showcasing your ideas but I was mistaken. I come from a blue collar background and this type of humor is not only accepted but encouraged. I won't be commenting on any of your threads again. Have a nice life.

Yes, I was offended. You can call me a dick but dont post a picture. You crossed the line. And some of the most respectable and decent peoples I know are blue collar. Decency is not a "social class" issue.

I've got no dog in this fight but respect both of your online personas and the help you've both given on this forum. So before this goes full nuclear maybe take it to PM. Just a thought.

Dude, I absolutely respect your contributions to this forum but from reading some of your interactions with different members, you seem to be wound pretty tight. infamousRNR and I put an enormous effort into makimg those axle seal repair videos and your only response was something negative because you didn't appreciate our humor. So be it. You can't make everyone happy. People will find our videos reagardless of the fact that they are no longer on your thread and they will be stoked somebody took the time to make them and not discount the material just because of a flash of a fake penis. As Sgt Hulka said in the movie Stripes, "Lighten up Francis".

I also find it hypocritical that you're giving me crap about being inappropriate on this forum but you choose to include one of the most polarizing topics in your signature, politics. I guess you don't care about how others feel about guns and the Clinton's. I'm a card carrying Republican and actually agree with your signature but I'm certainly not going to shove my political beliefs down people's throats every time I post on the forum. Those that live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones.

If you have read my posts on other threads, you would have quickly learned Im not looking for validation. Check out my thread on bypassing transmission cooler. That one is a hoot.

There is this really cool button at the top of the forum page.

"New Thread"

Why dont you use it. Let the forum get stoked with your videos on your own thread. Birds of a feather...

You are welcome to contribute to my threads, just keep it clean. Is that too much to ask? There is an old phrase. People know you by the friends you keep.

Don't waste your breath, just be thankful he doesn't post here that often. He's a jerk-off in every thread he enters. Maybe the mods should be looking at him.

I f*cking love the Internet. Thanks for all your hard word.

(Also put a smile on my face...awww that satisfied feeling. You know?)

So I guess to fix this for me. I'd have to press everything of and re press it this way ? I'm expierencing small leak. ****ing annoying because OEM SEALS. And both sides seem to be slowly leaking. Like wtf.

Not really. You could cut off the inner retainer and just replace it in the correct position and orientation with a new one. The trick is to heat it so it expands, then slide it into position. As it cools, it will shrink back to the axle.

On my truck the seals failed 3 times in 2 weeks and oil went thru the bearing. That was 60,000 miles ago and the bearsings are just fine.

Dr. Coffee, I encounter your suggestion to flip the retainer on the FJ forum since my passenger seal started leaking shortly after it was replaced. I'm wondering if your method helps FJ owners and do I need to use the OEM seal in my case at all costs?

Good call. Sounds much easier then pressing everything of

Mind sending me a PM with a link to your video? When I put my Tundra axle back together (before it goes under the Runner) I wanna make sure the seal is riding in the right place.

Thanks in advance,
Sean

The oem seal is just made better. It only costs $11. How many times do you want to do this repair? Use quality parts and do it right.

Hey brother, since both of yours are leaking you may wanna investigate your rear diff breather first and after that try just the inner seals.

If the bearings aren't bad don't replace them and don't go removing retaining collars if you don't have to. The inner most retaining collar needs to be in exactly the right spot to line up with the inner axle seal.

The problem most have with this is that you can easily press the ABS wheel and inner most collar on too far. There is no stop for it so you have to measure. That being said, make sure the backing plate is fully seated against the wheel bearing if your using that as a measuring point. If you take the entire axle assembly and stand it up on the end its pretty easy to get the backing plate to seat all the way by banging the cog end of the shaft on something solid. I used a 2x8 piece of wood on the floor, you don't want the teeth messed up. you should end up with the bearing recessed inside the backing plate assembly, maybe quarter or half inch or so. Now you can use the flat mating surface of the axle housing to measure inward to your seal and use the corresponding mating surface of your backing plate assembly to measure how far that inner most collar needs to sit.

Most toyota dealers won't even do this. They will replace the whole axle assembly. There is not a know measurement. Measure your before you take yours apart if it has never been messed with put it back together just like it was, to the MM.

In my opinion the parts aren't the issue here, its just too easy to get the collar in the wrong spot.

Just did mine

So yeah... Just did mine yesterday. Here's a few pictures and measurements I came up with. Truck has 230k on it.

Purchased the vehicle a few months ago. Previous owner said he had a wheel bearing replaced recently. Upon doing the first oil change I noticed large amounts of gear oil on passenger rear tire. Texted previous owner to find out which bearing he had replaced. Confirmed it was passenger side. Performed by local well known Toyota dealership.

Toyota dealership left me with this gem (no wonder it was leaking gear oil like mad! Notice no witness mark on retainer!):

All flipped, pressed, and grease tested:

Driver's side (virgin axle) I am assuming it was the factory installed bearing/seal because it was the old seal design. Had small amounts of gear oil in ABS housing not enough to contaminate brakes:

I think measuring from the "polished edge" is not the best idea. That isn't a set dimension from the face of the axle as far as I know - and there could be variances in how much material is polished from the factory, not to mention aftermarket manufacturers. Measuring from here is taking a chance... you might get lucky... you might not.

The Toyota FSM shows where the ring needs to be measured from the face of the axle.

Curious how did you suspect a bent shaft? Incident, noise, etc? And how did you verify it was indeed bent?

Sorry for the late response. I had an ongoing intermittent vibration that I could not pinpoint. Finally someone had mentioned bent axle can cause that. Sure enough, mine was out by 10thou if i remember correctly. Checked the runout with a dial indicator, per the FSM. Replaced axle with a junkyard unit.

I agree.

IMHO, I don't really care what measurement I got. All axles are gonna measure differently. You can even see in the pictures I posted that the polished section of axle doesn't have a straight cutoff line. You can sort of see a "stepped" section which would throw off measurements depending on what section you measured from anyway. The only thing I really cared about was the grease test being close to the center of the retainer and the retainer not hitting the axle housing once installed. I think I accomplished those two things.

Did this fix your int vibration???
