A simple Stealthy install Just finished, pics :) subs as big as speakers :)

hi all, new here, just finished a rather simple and unique install for a customers 03 four runner, figured i would share a few pics

the goal was simple:

1. keep the trunk as stealthy as possible

2. good sound quality

3. dont cost an arm and a leg

the customer supplied the two alpine amps, the avic d2 navigation unit, and i gave him the rest.

one of hte goals of creating a stealthy install on a budget in an SUV is that there is simply no place for anyhting to go out of sight. side boxes that fine but they are expensive to build and out of budget for this install.

so i decided that this was a perfect opportunity to use the elemental designs 6.5" EU700 subwoofer. a pack of four was used. the amp rack and subwnclsoure rises only 4.75" from the floor, making for a rather unobtrusive back.

DLS 426 component coaxials were used inthe door locations, and a ps2 and ipod adapter was installed also in the gloveboxes.

note: i hate it when the carpet i ordered looks two shaders yellower than on the sample color card oh well...i will try to find some lighter carpet to match better later

first up is the avic-d2, installed in the factory location:

the main attraction is obviously the trunk area. here is the view through the open back window wit hte stock cargo mat in place, this would be say the view of a thief if he were looking through your window at night...nothing obvious, perhaps the floor seems a little high but definetly not high enough for a subwoofer

vented pop off panels hide the subwoofers and amps

well, incase you guys wondering what the pack of 4 6.5" subs soun dlike even with a rather small amp power them, they are as loud as a good 12, and they are extermely natrual, and can easily reach down to 20hz and below. no wondering since they have over 13mm of one way xmax...

Yeah ive got a question, how do I install my 2 10W7's without taking up much cargo space? Ha. I know, you can't. But that is my dillema, I am thinking about putting them in seperate boxes and designing them to be removable. With some sort of a hinge and a lock. But great job on that install. Looks really good.

10w7? if i were to do it, would defiely be side boxes, one on each side...

Can you use the subs with the cover in place? It looks like the subs would hit the cover when on causing the coils to blow.

most definetly

if you look closely, you will see that the sub actually sits about 1/2" below the floor, the cover is fully vented as stated...

meaning they are hollow with mesh and then breathable carpet over it...clears the subs easily even at full excursion and does not affect output

Looks really good. Also for the person who wants the 10w7, unless you already bought them I would go with 2 10w6's and save a lot of money. I hear a lot of really good tigns about the w6's and bad things abut the w7's

both subs are good, though i think both subs are a bit over priced, but with the right install, both can sound great.

remember, at the end of hte day, 90 percent of how an install sounds comes down to installation and tuning

Ive already got the 10w7s. They are currently in my 98 mustang and I am going to remove them and sell my car. But I dont know if I actually want to put them in the runner yet or not.

very nice well what did u use to mount the ps2 in there with? i have my ps2 in my car too but dont have it mounted yet. need to find some kind of mounting bracket to keep it in place soo when i drive it dont rattle..

just velcrow, the low profile power inverte above it wedges it against the top so no rattles

that is totally sick! how often do you play your PS2 in the car? i plan to have a screen in my car also but i'm still debating of how much time i will spend in my car. but i love your setup!

humm can u get a close up picture of the ps2 soo i cant see i have the problem of making the cords go in there fit. when i close it the case kind moves up and down....

Question to anyone with the PS2 in their car currently or previously? Does that constant shaking and rattling not seriously affect the life of the ps2? I would think that all the vibrations would do something to the laser or some sort of mechanism inside it. I would seriously consider buying another 360 to put in my car for long road trips if I didnt have to worry about that.

i dont personally play, but my ucstomer will, and he will use it as a dvd changer as well..

for most of my customers, i do visor and headrest scresns for true viewing

i will try to get to take some pics...but basically i cut out the back left corner of hte pocket so the wires snake in there

if the ps2 is solidly mounted, the shaking wont do much, i have done perhap 50 ps2 installs over the years and none has really caused much issue

Few questions if you don't mind.

How about those ED midbass/subs ?! They must be quite the conversation starter when people see those small subs in there.

I don't think I saw this: did you have all 4 of those subs in one enclosure, or did they have their own (estimated .25 cu ft?) enclosure?

I've heard that those EU700's have good SQ and pack quite the punch, I bet they blow away the 6.5" bazooka tubes. But I think I read somewhere that they lack a certain bandwidth when used in a sealed enclosure, I think it was 60-80hz or something like that. Did you test them at all? I'm curious because I'm looking for a replacement for my L7's already = not responsive enough for metal and the SQ is subpar in my opinion.

Also, how many watts do you have going to them? I assume DVC and they can handle 150w per coil, so you could theoretically have 1000w amp to power 4 of them with the right total impedance of course.

PS> I gotta say - why did you stick with the yellow carpet? I mean, you put all that time/effort/money into a great install for someone else, but couldn't swing a trip to Autozone and spend $30 on some grey to really make the install super stealthy??!!
