some of these may seem dumb, but g.i. joes say knowledge is power and I need to know.....

1) In ALL of the pics Ive seen of 1st gen interiors ...(shifter in view) it looks to me as if the 4wd shifter is in an 'upward' position, meaning more towards the front of the truck, whereas in my truck, if the stick were in that position I would be in L4....... its had me baffled....
Ill post an example but wont be able to get a pic of mine for a number of reasons..

2) What are the "Clutch Start Cancel" and "Deck Lamp" buttons all about? Left side of the steering wheel.


Thanks, and if absolutely necessary, Icould TRY and get a decent cell phone + head lamp pic......

The "Clutch Start Cancel" switch overides the clutch neutral start switch.
The "Deck Lamp" switch turns on the cargo compartment light.

For the t-case shifter, forward to the left side is 2HI. Rearward left side is 4HI, Forward to the right side is 4LO.

Here's an example of what im talking about:

that, in my truck would be 4lo...... and I can find atleast ten more the same..

3) Is shifting from 4hi to 4lo on the fly okay? At extremely low speeds ofcourse, like when working a rut or something

4) when I looked up my vin, it showed my truck as an auto, but she def has 5spds and reverse.... do those things screw up or has this thing been frankensteined?? I dont remember exactly which decoder it was..

This inst exactly a dumb"question" but,,,, I like to fill up before I go 4 wheeling...

In the picture you posted, that should be 4 low. You really should be pretty much stopped before shifting from 4 hi to 4 lo or 4 lo to 4 hi. Shifting from 2 hi to 4 hi while moving is okay as long as you aren't spinning your rear tires!!

The "clutch start cancel" when pushed will allow you to start your runner without depressing the clutch. Just be careful not to do so with the truck in gear because it will start and could run off on you! A friends girlfriend did that in his once to get in the heat and warm up and ended up running the runner off a 10 foot bank flipping the runner and getting banged up pretty good!! The 84 and 85 models didn't have this, they will start in gear whether you are depressing the clutch or not

thanks 85, well the thing is, it seems like EVERY picture I see they are all in 4lo and obviously not offroad (driveway etc etc) just had me wondering

It's a "J" shaped shifting patern:



4L
x
2H N
x x
x4-Hx

So the pics can look like 2H or 4L. Of the pic you posted, 4L would be farther to the passenger side and farther forward.

Since no one has answered

3) no, you really need to come to a stop

4) Just look at the transmission code a the bottom of the VIN plate, A340x is auto, G52/54/58 or W56 is manual.
