A Walk Around My 96 Hilux Surf

Got it in October, it's only started looking clean recently! 1996 3-litre Diesel Intercooler SSR-G. Import from Japan, no sunroof, everything else. Tints are stock. Stripey carpets big in Japan, as is smoking, apparently (Smoker-San's ciggie burns).

Done:
Wheels Refurbed
New Aussie Lightforce spots
A-Bar insert carbon wrapped
Decent JVC head with components and sub tube
Replaced rear heater matrix pipes with 8mil copper pipes
Scratched the front corner
Repainted the front corner
Custom T4R.ORG sticker!!!!!!! Only one in UK?

That's a beautiful Surf with an even more beautiful diesel under the hood. I personally don't like a lot of the extras that they come with (ie the front light mount, third side mirror, big visors, rear wing, etc etc), but would take all of it in a SECOND to have a turbo 3.0.

I was not that keen on the light bar either but I actually make use of the lights in the Winter evenings. The fogs that came on it were shot anyway - the internals had perished over time and they were also cruddy yellow lens units and made the truck look neglected. So they had to go.

I don't intend to do rockcrawling in it but it's great for putting the camping kit and moutain bikes straight inside without having to break them down. Also great in the snow when you're self-employed and not getting to the client = no pay.

3.0D is a beast engine. Done 196,000 kms (Jap odo) and seems to pull harder the faster you are going... Cruising at 85-90 MPH is no sweat, under 3K RPM and gives ~ 30mpg on a trip and ~25 around the doors.

Great truck Jimster. I like seeing these threads about 4Runners (Surfs) from around the world. That's an interesting color combo you've got on yours. I've never seen that combination before.

I'm am sure they are for the "blind" spots that vehicles have.
In 4th gen runners they have mirrors in the rear interior of the truck for thy purpose also.

The little front mirrors are required by law in Japan but still one heck of a wart on the fender,I'm glad we don't have those on ours. The added on fat lip piece doesn't look right either but overall they are still sweet versions of our 3rd gens.

The one ugly part is the floor mats which look more suited to a bathroom than in a truck.

I actually only found that out yesterday when my uncle did a detailing job on a 4th gen. I thought those mirrors were pretty cool, haha.

Anyway, yeah I would almost kill to have one of those 3.0TD Surfs in my driveway. Growing up on a farm and working with tractors a lot has given me a special appreciation for diesel engines. :nerd:
