About to install my oil catch can. Question

Anyone who has a catch can have trouble with it freezing in the winter?
Where are you geographically? What were the conditions?
What size can and how often do you have to drain it?
Do you remember if the can has baffles (seems important for performance and likely off-road)?
wfo9 I assume you added one before the Magnuson, if not what did you do with the PCV recirc line?

No freezing for me, not in a very cold climate.
I use the moroso can, drain it when I think about it...
The can has encapsulated stainless steel mesh to capture the oil. The air has to travel through the mesh to go from inlet to outlet.. Then gravity lets the oil drip down through holes in a plate to the bottom of the can .

With the magnuson.. the PCV reticulation line runs from the back of the valve cover to the inlet side of the blower. It has to do this because if it was on the outlet side/intake manifold... it would see positive pressure under boost.

So the oil mist runs through the rotors and coats the inter cooler plate.... even more of a reason to run one.... IMHO

Just an FYI, 5th gen needs 2 cans. There is a breather on both sides of the engine. Not sure about earlier 4.0 engines but likely they are the same. I have 2 on order which will be here on Tuesday.

No..... The passenger side is just the fresh air source. Make sure you understand how the system works before proceeding. Putting a breather on the fresh air side won't hurt.. but it will serve no purpose at all.

I appreciate the heads up. If this is the case, I was unfortunately misinformed by another member. I'll do my own investigating and make a decision. Worst case, I end up with a spare can for future use and I'll only have to fabricate one mount. Not the end of the world either way. Cans should be here Tuesday and I intend on installing one or both this week or weekend. I'll post pictures and reviews once installed.

You could always use both cans in a series for more capacity or better filtering. I'd be interested to see how much the second can picks up while the first is still empty.
PCV Valve > Can1 > Can2 > Intake Manifold

That's a thought also. 1st can should catch the majority of it but the 2nd one for good measure can't hurt. We'll see what happens once I have them and plan it out. Either way I will post pictures once done and post results at my 5K mile oil chance. Yes I change my oil and filter every 5K miles.

Install complete. Mounted the can on the driver side fender using one of the unused factory threaded holes. 3/8 vacuum hose from NAPA since the included hose was a joke and not vacuum hose. Put some loom on the hose to give it a factory look and will put clamps on the hose at the canister tomorrow. Forgot my clamp kit at home but really don't even need them, hoses fit snug.

My BMW definitely would have benefited by having one of these.
2016 4Runner SR5; Can you list your part number and where you bought it? Can you give an update as to what you find at your determined interval?
What is the capacity of that can?
Thanks!

Just pulled the trigger and ordered the McNally Gen2 Catch Can. Expensive and probably more than I need, but I'm tired of looking and this looked like the best one around. For some reason the Universal isn't available for sale, so I just ordered the one for the Tacoma, shouldn't be that different from what I need.

I recall from my 60kmi visit to the dealer they suggested an intake manifold cleaning every 15kmi. Now this is a city dealer, where I had previously been visiting more rural dealers before and never heard of such stuff. After the cleaning I experienced a noticeable increase in performance and throttle response. If I can notice that on a simple before/after service on the same day, then it's something that should probably be done once in a while.

I'm was left thinking a catch can would help eliminate a lot of that. A few of those intake cleanings would cover the cost of the catch can. But before I drop $200-$400 on one, I've got a couple questions:

Where are you geographically? What were the conditions?
What size can and how often do you have to drain it?
Do you remember if the can has baffles (seems important for performance and likely off-road)?

Interesting experience on the cleaning. I've only ever used a catch can on a fixed up Honda with NOS, the catch can helps with the oil increasing the likelihood of detonation. I had a Greddy can that had a clear tube to see when to drain, probably once every couple months on mine even though not "full". On newer cars the ECU controls so much stuff, ie if the knock sensor detects knock or about to knock, then the ECU retards the timing etc giving you less throttle response. So the increase in performance you experienced could be related. Every little bit helps, kind of like those Pedal Commander types of devices for throttle response.

I would be careful about the can you use... The cheap ones are useless and you don't need one with a check valve on these trucks as it could restrict a bit (that is strictly for boosted apps with manifold inlets)

I use the moroso can. There are many similar and they generally work the best. the picture shows how it is setup. There is a diverter in the middle which forces the air to go down and around. The mesh inside helps capture the oil and it drips down.....

They are about $140 on amazon for the universal kit. http://a.co/7sF5Xzz

I'm sure there are other great options that are even better, but the super cheap ones are no good.

damn and here i thought the one i put in my dodge was expensive
11-17 Durango Jeep SRT8 SC Oil Catch Can Separator Plug N Play ™

considering one of these as the quality was good.

My next oil change is in 1000 miles, I hope not to find anything at all in there but we'll see. I can tell you the OEM hose from the PCV valve to the manifold was clean and dry. I change my oil every 5000 miles so we'll see what it looks like after 6000 miles total.

Elcheapo from Ebay, the included hose is absolutely useless for anything vacuum related and it's ugly as hell. Buy 4 feet of 3/8 vacuum line from Napa and a couple clamps and you're good to go.

Some like to spend big money, I say save that for something else. Plenty of guys using these cans and they work just fine.

If you are not finding oil in it... it is not working or your PVC system is clogged... Never seen one not collect oil and I've been using them for 20 years.

I'm sure you know this.. but that one in the link should not be used on our trucks with a breather (that part must be blocked off)... That will cause all types of issues with undeterred air.

It doesn't come with the breather even though it shows it as an option. I read the auction completely before buying it and it does say no breather is included. The top of the can is flat, not drilled or ported. Not finding oil in the can is more wishful thinking than anything lol. I do expect to find some but I don't expect to find much. Here's a picture of the can.

Surprised catch are being put on these vehicles...based off my experience they did nothing whatsoever to reduce carbon build up. Coming from a GTI which are notorious for early carbon build up, it was proven the catch can did little to nothing to reduce build up. Same results for both mine 2013 TFSI and my buddies 09 TFSI. What would be so different on the 4runner especially with no forced induction?
