Absalom's Build Thread #2 - Revenge of the Oil Burners

Ditched the unwieldy, tired 33's for some light, supple, and nimble 32" Duratracs, load range C. The difference is staggering. I wish I had made the switch sooner. 99% ready for our upcoming Mexico trip at this point.

Yumm ... so meaty!!

32's FTW! :thumb:

hey mate, was it you that wanted my 1k engine mounts? Have them sitting in a box in the garage. Cover postage cost and they are yours.

Please forgive me if the answer is obvious.. I am new around here and am trying to do as much research as possible before lifting my Runner. I have noticed that it is somewhat common to use tokico shocks with the LC coils. What was your reasoning for going with the monroes?

They ride amazingly. Like shockingly well. Also, they are only $19 a piece. All of my suspension is just placeholders for 2.5" revamp down the road. I highly recommend the Monroes though!

You put new headlights in it?
Aye, 55 watt, 3" DDM HID projectors in 4300k. Stunning output!

I presume you did the retro fit your self? they look great!mind if i ask where you got the hardware from?
DDM Tuning. About $170 for everything you see. My last retrofit from TRS took 2 days. This one took about 3 hours. Gogo threaded projector bodies!

Small Update

Keeping myself busy while I scour the country for remaining suspension parts. LC coils, TRD struts/coils, UCA's and steering bushings are en route.

Removed spare tire, painted rear hatch sill, gathered some DOM and heims for adjustable panhard bar, adjusted tranny linkage (was never done post body lift) and dipped emblems.

My sloppy steering bushings

The spacers in the rear are massive and squish the springs down the size of sports car springs. It's no wonder this rides so rough.

Easy Tire Balancing!

Going to use about 9oz per tire.

I have no idea how old this post is, but did the pellets do the job on the balancing of your wheels?

I need to get mine redone in the front. Get a bit of a shimmy at 71-75 mph...?

The video of the steering, what are we see that is abnormal? Did you fix and what did you do?
Thanks as always.

For future reference, when quoting folks, it helps to remove their pics from your reply. This makes it easier to see the question you've asked and get you the answers asap!
Now, the balancing did not work, but only because my tire was completely out of round. This can not be attribute to the pellets, but the tire itself (it was very old)
In the steering video, you're seeing a steering rack pitch back and forth with far too much movement. Replacing the original, old rubber bushings with new poly bushings made a massive difference.

Sup bro!

I enjoyed reading both of your build threads. Jw how on earth you managed to get strike 6's? Are they 16s or 17s? I had a chance to get some earlier this year but missed the sale at discounttiredirect. Since then ive heard theyre discontinuing the strike 6 wheels and thats one of my favorite inexpensive wheels!

Btw do you have a diy tutorial for the panhard bar? I bought a toytecs drop bracket but would love to make my own adjustable like yours.

Wait you want to put a TDI motor in your 4R?
That's the plan. Unfortunately, I've been getting slowed down by an increasingly busy housing market. But it's still very much the plan! Should be a beast when she's finished!

As far as I know, the strike 6s are still available. For the panhard bar, I tried locating my receipt from the metal supply shop with no luck. Honestly though, it's really easy to make. Get some stout DOM tubing, threaded bung inserts (one left and one right hand thread), and then two heim joints with matching thread patterns. Measure the existing space, cut your tubing to match, weld in the bungs, screw in the heims and voila. Took me all of 15 mins once I had the supplies! Oh, and don't forget two jam nuts with matching thread patterns.

Final Update :(

Superflexes installed!
dmwpLrQ.jpg

This will probably serve as my last update for this truck, more on that in a second. I finally got around to swapping the LC coils for some ToyTec Superflexes. The ride is slightly softer, and the truck doesn't seem to wallow and squirm as much under breaking. Also, the rake is much less pronounced now, I couldn't be happier with how the truck looks and handles. Which makes the following news much more bittersweet.

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. Work has been increasingly busy, family life has been wonderful, and I'm really looking to decrease the time spent working on vehicles in the garage. Add a positive pregnancy test to the mix, and my plate is completely full. So, with a very heavy heart, I've decided to cancel my plans of a TDI swap. However, as I'm incredibly passionate about all things diesel, I've decided to import a HDJ81 from Japan. I actually just received confirmation that I did indeed win the auction on the below truck. I love Toyotas, so importing a turbo-diesel 80 series with front and rear lockers, in addition to factory winch, was a no brainer.

The new girl. Should be very clean after new paint!

The truck will receive a fresh coat of metallic gray paint upon it's arrival in Phoenix (ETA. October 15th) and a suspension refresh. Once my wife becomes accustomed to the RHD aspect, I'll be selling my 4runner to make room in the driveway.

Copy of my winning bid -- 699,000 yen!!

I really love what this forum offers, and it has certainly served as a home away from home when work was stressful. I'll certainly still be checking in to offer my unwanted opinion when appropriate. Thank you all for your help and patience with this project. 3rd gen 4runners are still one of the finest vehicles Toyota ever produced, and if mine were already diesel I'd never dream of selling it.

For those in Phoenix who've never been in an HDJ81 and would like a ride, shoot me a text 480.779.8307 and I'll make it happen. They are pretty neat trucks, and I really look forward to many more happy miles with the new girl.

Hope that works out for ya would make an amazing overland vehicle once all the mechanics are gone through. Got any 3rd gen stuff laying around??
