Abuse or common failure?

Probably because they were already on their last legs, if you look at the second shock picture the shock rod is at an angle, that can only occur if the rod has eaten away the strut top (takes a lot of time for that to happen). They didn't put the bottom support washers and the rubber finally gave out and shoved the rods through the worn out/oval'd strut tops. This wouldn't be the first time we've seen it on the forums.

That's a rough one, I'd cut and run. You said you don't have a lot of capital and that's more of a fixer upper than you'll want to deal with.
 
Thanks for all your input. My price range was around 9k found this one and was thinking i could use the extra cash for some upgrades and repairs. This would just be a weekend toy. I do have a first gen to keep me occupied till i find another 4th gen

I would run away from that and get a delousing just for piece of mind. That looks like one headache after the other leading to a rage stroke or having pooky help you burn this mother to the ground.
 
How does it drive? I dont think its a bad price at all from the looks of it. Regular oil changes?
