AC compressor/On board air

Ive been thinking. My A/C doesn't work anymore ( I think there is a leak somewhere and I lost my refrigerant ). My compressor and everything still works just fine. Is it possible to convert the compressor to use it for on board air? I know there wont be a tank, but would it be enough to air up tires and maybe run a impact? Just a little thought, would be nice if this could work.

Saw a build thread about this. Short answer yes but you have to be able to oil it but not evough to run a impact. If you search it should come up

get a tank, even if its a small one. and make sure it has a pop off/safety valve.

forget an impact, that wont happen. but it will work fine for airing up tires.

I used an engine coolant flush TEE on the intake side for oiling purposes, it worked good.

keep it oiled, and don't try to run the rpms up for more air, that will just burn the pump up faster. just use it at idle.

Sweet. Thanks for the replies and info on the subject. Is there a way to replace the AC compressor with a stronger one to be able to run an impact? Also if I used the factory AC compressor with a tank, would I be able to use it on day for ARB lockers?

For arb lockers id just use the arb pump. i know that they do deals sometimes and throw in the mini compressor. and look on nevada's build thread he has an upgraded pump thats not a ac compressor. if you have the money to get arb lockers then you should be able to buy a $200 compressor from them. just my .02

im not sure if they make an adapter for an upright/York compressor for the Toyota.
they do make one for the jeep 4.0, so its possible. but, even so you'll need a tank to run tools.

but to answer, yes with a tank, you could use it for your ARB, or any other air locker.

actually, mine WAS an AC compressor originally as well. its just a GOOD one.

A York compressor will run an impact. I don't think there's an aftermarket solution to bolt it up to the motor, I think you'll have to fab your own brackets.

Personally, I kinda like having that giant hole in my engine bay where the AC compressor used to be. I thought about converting my factory AC or adding a York, but I think I'll end up springing for that badass dual ARB setup when I'm ready for more air than my little baby Viair is putting out.

I found these..

from this thread.

Just another toyota build - Projects and Fabrication - Off-Camber.com - Page 3

I think they made the brackets themselves, but it looks pretty simple.

Just remember that A/C compressors are high pressure not high volume.......which having a tank will make it more efficient imo. Which is why I'm adding two more tanks.

Get a york

Spend the time to fab up a bracket to install a York and a tank. I put a 5 gallon beer keg as my tank where the spare went, and can air up my 35's from 9 to 30 psi in 45 seconds. It also nice to have a tank so you can blast your air horn at people when they cut you off.
