AC issues intermittent

i have been having AC issues with my 2010 4runner and after searching I havent seen any posts or threads on the issue. I started as simply not turning on one day. The fan wouldn't blow at all. Air would come in if outside air was allowed in but no fan. I checked the fuses and still no go. Hours later it magically turned on. ive noticed some days it goes right on and others it take a while to kick on. Now two days in a row it doesn't turn on at all. comeback later after leaving work or running errands and now it does. any ideas?

i have a limited and no matter what i do by changing temp or adjusting fan control makes no difference.

Hi 4runninit,

A couple things could be going on here. I too have a L.E. with dual auto temp control. Your auto temp control modulates your fan, based on the demand/set point in the vehical.

If the fluid in the "Heater core" is cold, then the blower for the heat is not allowed to operate, until the engine coolant is hot enough to warm the air in the duct system; this prevents cold air from blowing on the passengers in the vehical.

It works the same way for the A/C; prevents hot air from discharging from the duct system, until the a/c evaporator is cooling with-in it's normal operating parameters(35-45 deg F).

So this may be preventing your fan from ramping up. Check and see if your a/c clutch is engaging. The a/c clutch is controlled by a "Low pressure switch" (LPS), located on the suction side of the a/c system; most likely on the accumulator.

This is to prevent the operation of the a/c compressor in the event of a low refrigerant condition. So then, if your system is low on refrigerant, it would lock-out the a/c compressor, which in turn may, prevent the system fan from operating.

This would also account for the system working..."sometimes"; because the outdoor temp goes up, raising the system pressure, and permitting compressor operation. And it goes down, lowering the system pressure, and locking out the a/c compressor.

So check and see if the system fan works in the "Heating mode". If it does, then you can check that as being okay, and working as it should. Next, turn on your a/c. you should hear the clutch engage.

Right now, it's too cold for it to run for any length of time, but if it comes on, at least you'll know that it works and is not damaged. You'll have to have the system refrigerant checked at a good auto a/c shop/dealership.

edit: It's not too cold if you're in Fl.; just noticed that you're down there. lol

Thanks for you help. Ill look at those things. I went to bring it to my mechanic this morning and of course it was working blowing nice and cold for now.

Okay, IF your cooling is working "as it should" at this time, that alone tells us that the A/C system has at least a moderate refrigerant charge, and we can dismiss a low refrigerant pressure, compressor lock-out, as being the cause.

P.S: Please let me know what you find out from your mechanic(P.M.), my curiosity is getting the best of me, Lol

not the same issue but if I put mine on recirculate it will turn off on it's own after about 5 minutes... Fing Gremlins!

The "Dual, automatic temperature control system" in the 5th Gen 4Runner, is designed to consider the Air Quality, both inside and outside of the vehical.

So if you set the controls to "Recirculate" the air in the cabin, and "system logic" determines, after a few minutes of operation, that outdoor air is needed to keep the windshield defogged, then it will make the decision to turn off the "Recir" feature. Gremlin free zone! Lol

well "system logic" must be Fing with me because it turns recirc off anytime I pass a water treatment plant or someone runs over a damn skunk! never Fing fails!:wacko:

Hi stifler, Try this....

Turn off the "Auto" temperature control feature before engaging the recirculate mode button. If the "Recirculate mode" now stays on, then you'll know that "system logic" was controlling this function; as it should.
