Access to injector wires

My TEP is currently at the stealership (my wife had it towed), apparently a rat has chewed through an injector wire. The service rep informed me they'll have to remove the intake manifold to complete the repair, and the charge will be $750.

I'm mechanically inclined and have no issue doing it myself, but I'm curious, how much of a pain is it remove the intake manifold and work on the top end?

I've changed the oil on it once so far, other than that though, I haven't looked at the engine much. We bought it so I wouldn't have to work on it! Damn rats.

I hate those critters! The same thing happened to a co-workers 2014 TE. One of the Toyota dealers in Albuquerque actually covered it but said if it happened again, my friend would have to pay.

I've had the Air Surge Tank(Toyota-speak for plenum) and intake manifold off another Asian SUV a number of times. Just a bunch of labor. Keep track of bolts - what hole(s) they go in, brackets, etc.

The factory service manual for a 2010 4.0 liter 4 Runner is here. Another member made it available some time ago:

Once you read thru the pertinent sections, you'll need to buy new plenum gaskets and int. man. gaskets before starting. Could be some other stuff as well. Buy the parts from a dealer and not after-market providers.

Been there, dealer quoted the same amount, but in the process of diagnosing blew a fuse and the truck wouldn't start anymore! Demanded a refund and had my mechanic fix it for $300. Should've done it myself.

They will, our deductible is $500. I decided to do it myself, I couldn't bring myself to pay someone to repair a wire. I pulled the upper intake off last night, pretty straightforward like lugnut said. The hardest part was figuring out how certain connectors came off. Here's what I found:

The little bastard was making a nest using wire looming it chewed through, among other debris. No sign of it though.

see what the price difference is to lower your OTC insurance to a $50 deductible, I think it was like an extra $4/month for me and i've used the hell out of OTC claims

Can you elaborate on what you've used it for? I'll definitely look into this. For $50, I wouldn't bat an eye about having insurance cover it.

haven't needed it yet for the 4Runner, but in the past:
GEICO repainted the front of my BMW twice because of road rash/rock chips, someone left a long scratch down the side at the store (looked like something dragged against it while someone walked by, not collision) which required buffing and new clear coat, i hit a squirrel once in a weird way that damaged a fog light and fog light mount, windshield kicked in and hood damaged from some drunk idiot running on the top of cars, branch fell on a car during a storm that required some paintless dent repair, etc...
