accidentally revved up while cold

I thought I read somewhere that modern engines pull a lot of timing because the exhaust gas tumble of nonvvti actually helps the car warm up the cats and internals faster, before it feeds timing advance back in once warm. But coulda misread.

My second worry was how unrefined the 1GR-FE feels while at that half-warmed stage. It vibrated more than when warmed up, and sounded a bit louder too. Anyone know if that's likely just the car pulling timing while cold to protect itself better, mixed with cold exhaust noises vs a warm, mellow exhaust? Or do I need to be pretty concerned?

Last - anyone else do this accidentally or intentionally? Was it a nonissue for yall lile I hope?

Don't sweat it. I live in the Chicago-land area. 45 is a summer day for us this time of year. You'll be fine!

And for all the jokesters - old jokes don't get cool suddenly.

It was more the rough sound that bothered me, and the coolant gauge being only about halfway up, than the actual temperature.

I mean I go to 12,000+ ft altitude regularly in Sierra, and have left my car at 10-20F plenty of times (ok, my old 3rd gen not this one yet)... and have been in -43F temps in Quebec before.

I was just surprised how rough it revved above 4k.

I def think the ECU pulled timing and that's why it felt rough. But glad to know it'll be ok and that oil had plenty of time to circulate.

I was a sprint booster hater before, not so much now. It's a very mushy pedal, and overreacts sometimes.
 
In case anyone was curious, here's what my tuning friend reminded me.

I totally forgot about open loop fueling.

(1/3)Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that. Most engine damage happens immediately after starting the car, especially if it has been sitting a long time so all the
(2/3)oil drains back down. By the time it is half warm, it should be fine. Almost all modern engines run rich and adjust timing when cold (until the ECU enters
(3/3)closed loop operation, which usually takes a while), and that makes it run rough, so it was probably that.
 
Funny thread. Try having to floor it when its -45C out and the motor is cold, but you gotta floor it because your about to be rammed by some idiot. The motor makes a loud pause followed by a grunting type of noise..the transmission..makes a sound like impending death..

Yet truck still runs fine..

Btw as tuning becomes an increasing topic on these forums, b/w OrangeVirus and others, open and closed loop fueling will be important to know about.

You're never supposed to log post-tune while your car's still in open loop.

But it's cool. I'll see you around Buttermilk Road, MTN ADV dickhead with nothing useful to say.

It's useful to me. I had forgotten the open loop stuff (which is very relevant to anyone tuning down the road or anyone else who notices their truck rev disproportionally rough in the first ~5 mins after startup).

You have a noted history of this crap on here, and clearly no life. Further, you obsess over removing ounces or chain length on your mountain bike, and solicit other dudes to ride with you in Rancho Santa Margarita, so it's quite the glass house to be insinuating someone else 8 years younger and probably a foot taller than you is a weirdo because they noticed their truck running rough.

I simply have no problem letting you call me a weirdo to my face. As for if you do, and what happens next, hopefully you'll either give me the opportunity to whoop your candy ass in self defense or ride off as fast as you can on your little bike and reflect on your true colors without it coming to that.

Ive offered you the opportunity to say something rude to my face you found necessary to say online. And if you get in my face in the process and I have to defend myself and end up knocking you out, then, shoot. That's unfortunate, I suppose. Doesn't mean I'm too bent out of shape about it.

As for contributions, nobody is getting paid on posts or replies on these forums, so I'd remind you it's a subjective assessment, and we're not being weighed against any formal criteria. But a few of the replies weren't trolls, so I assume to them it was worth answering, and to me it was valuable to hear their answers, see where in the overall range of extremes my situation was, and then follow up with what was pretty much the actual, technical answer for what I experienced - open loop fueling which makes the truck run a very rich AFR until coolant and/or oil is at full temperature.

As for a Honda Fit, it'd have the same problem - so clearly you haven't yet absorbed how open/closed loop fueling actually works.

I have no idea what you'd have to lose with a assault charge, but I'd have plenty.
So again, you are not worth it. If I had to defend myself, no problem there. I've won some and lost some. Not new to it.

Look, I don't know a thing about fueling. And perhaps you were so sensitive to my comment because you got dog piled on with WTF replies. IDK. My comment about you being a "weird dude" was just a poke at the nature of your post. It just sounded lame to me. I don't know you as a person so obviously I have no idea if you are really weird. But, it struck a nerve with you it seems so for that I take it back.
