Adding a Remote Start Kit

i have a SR5, and the simplest 2-way viper (responder one), it does not change the stat of the doors.... if you start the car with doors open then they will remain open. and if you start the car with doors locked, they will remain locked. Viper disables the original remote entry system and you will have to open the doors(if locked) using the Viper remote instead of the original Toyota one.

doesnt the viper we are referring to only have one single button to start the car? how do you unlock the doors using the viper?

you are correct...the viper i have...has one-button remote...here is how it works...

1) hold the button down for a second or two...and you get 'beeping' confirmation..and led light flashes on the remote..indicating the car is starting. (there is option to require "double" key press...if you fear your one-press will occur accidentally in your pocket..etc...i have one-press enable and have NOT yet started it accidentally...i park outside...so starting in a garage (carbon monoxide) is not a fear for me)

2) when the car is running...press the same button again (for roughly one second)...until you hear a beep again...this UNLOCKS the doors (if they were locked...if they were already unlocked...i don't believe anything will happen)

3) if you HOLD down the button on the remote for over 3 or so seconds...the vehicle engine will shut off...(will also shut off..if the pre-set, adjustable time-limit is exceeded..or the brake pedal is pressed, without the key in ignition)

hope this helps!....this may seem confusing..but, honestly...i think only once so far...i shut off the car, when i attempted/meant to open the doors...you get the hang of it after a day or so !

Has anyone done the install of the toyota OEM remote start PT398-89100?

I want to do it on a sr5 without the SMART system and am not sure if i need a techs computer or not. and if it is just a plug and play install, i want to do an XM and remote start install at the same time. any help would be great.

My dealer just installed the Pursuit Extended Range Remote Start System.

I had the option of the one built into the Smart Start system on my LE or using the long range model. For about $50 more than the Toyota brand, I opted for the Pursuit version. It works just like the OEM, except, much longer range ~1200 ft according to the specs. However, just like OEM Remote Start, it shuts off when you open the doors. Smart Start works just like it did before w/o any issues. The only difference is the longer range and easier remote start.

Mine came with the remote starter factory installed....has limited range....never measured it, but it's not too far...

Has anyone been able to get the stock unit to work with an iPhone app? That would be great.

As far as I know, the OEM remote start doesn't have an iPhone app option and its not listed on any of the Toyota literature. However, the dealer did have a Pursuit version that had the iPhone app feature but it wasn't worth the cost. There's another thread in the Audio/Electronics subforum where a member had an aftermarket remot start w/ the iPhone option but complained that it didn't work very well.

If range is what your looking for, get a Compustar system. Many of their 2-way systems can Tx and Rx up to a mile (5000'.) I've had one in my 3rd gen for 8 years now and I've never had issues with it. I highly recommend them. I love the 2 way remote because I constantly second guess whether or not I remembered to lock it. This way I don't have to walk back and check.

I agree on Compustar system. I had one in my 04 Sequoia and never never had any issues with it. The range is amazing and that was on the first gen Compustar systems. I remember I was at Taj Mahal casino in the hotel room and I could start my car that was parked outside.

My wife's set of keys have the 1-way and mine has the 2-way. Sometimes I can tell that she has let the truck auto-arm, because my remote starts singing while I'm in the house. This usually happens when she stops at the gas station.
