Really wish I would have seen this before I got the oem starter installed before I bought it. Anybody know how hard it is to uninstall the oem to add the compustar?
There is a remote starter that is plug and play type and you can add cellular app with receiver. It’s made by 12volt.solutions
Before I found this thread I bought a system from my local shop including installation, it gets installed Friday. They are telling me the engine will not shut off when I open the door (I think its a key vs push button start thing). Compustar - FT-DC3-LC
Thanks for the recommendations guys! We have kits for both the key and push start. Push start will shut down when opening the door. Key starts will stay running and allow takeover. Either one can be activated from the OEM remote by pressing lock 3 times and both are 100% plug and play. Longer range remotes or smartphone modules can be added to either as well. Let us know if you have any other questions and as always check out our section in the vendor area for a discount code.
Arthurm - for a basic remote start installed expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $400 including the parts, labor, bypass etc. And the groupon deals always sound good but often dont include the bypass which they will add another $100 or so on for. If you are comfortable doing the labor yourself its maybe 15 - 20 connections depending on options but you can definitely save a few bucks that way. Either of those you mentioned Avital or Compustar are both nice units as long as you stick with any of the major brands and find a reputable installer you’ll be good to go!
Before spending any money, go out to your T4R and depress the lock button on your factory key fob 3xs w/in 5 seconds. A valet accidentally demonstrated to me that I had remote start. Dealership searched and said I did not. I then stumbled upon the answer that I did and how to trigger it.
What year/model do you have? Would love to find out if my 2018 does this.
I added the OEM remote start after the fact. It is all plug and play as far as wire harnesses, but probably more involved dash dis-assembly than most people would be comfortable with. You will still need to take it to a dealer to program it to the engine immobilizer.
I think it took me about 3 hours to install.
Sure. I installed it in like 2013, so I have forgotten most of the details.I purchased a factory remote starter for my 2013 4Runner. May I message you about the install?
