After market Head Unit for 5th Gen Limited.

Good day all. I was hoping for some help from the community.

I am looking upgrade the only part of my 2010 4Runner Limited that I find myself being only slightly less than pleased with... The stereo. I currently have the stock JBL system with NAV. Prior to purchasing the 4Runner, I had an A4 with a Kenwood DNX-9140 installed in it. Seems to me the sound was significantly more full across the spectrum coming from the Bose speakers. Seems like the stock speakers in the 4Runner are a bit more tinny and lacking in midbass. I have done some research and find myself leaning toward the updated version of my previous head unit, the Kenwood DNX-9960.

Here is what I need help with however, has anyone gotten an after market unit put in their 5th Gen? If so I would love to see some picture of how the dash looks after the install.

Also what speakers would you recommend? I was again leaning toward JL C5-650's for the front doors and JL C2-650X for the backdoors/rear hatch.

Since there is not a stealth box or another enclosure out yet (correct me if I am wrong) that won't monopolize my rear cargo area I am just going to replace the factory sub with an 8" JL.


If anyone has any input or pictures of their own installs I would really love to see them.

Do a search, many have done this. I think there are build threads too.

I would recommend changing out the speakers first. I was surprised how crappy the stock ones are. Go for high sensitivity ones.

Okay, found some threads with the installs done. I can't decide if I like all that extra silver where the knobs/buttons would have been..... But I am not a fan of how the factory unit sounds and absolutely hate how gimped the unit becomes while the vehicle is moving.

I would love to hear suggestions on head units/speakers/amps etc. I am doing my research, but would like other user's experiences/thoughts.

The Scoche kit is a little more decorative with different angles, and lends itself to that space being more open/bare.

The only thing I didn't like with the scosche kit was the cheesy brackets they required. It didn't hold the head unit very well. The metra kit allows for better fitment.
But I agree. If you're not going to "utilize" the open space, it does look ginormous. I think it's better painted, though.

Yeah, I had both, and the best part about the Metra is that you can use the stock metal brackets. The problem is the bezel and what to do with the open space on the sides. The Scoche kit has a bit better aesthetics IMO, but the plastic brackets are a much weaker substitute for the metal brackets. With that said, I've not felt my head unit was loose at any point in the last few months. I did a comparison of the 2 kits somewhere on here (it *should* be searchable).

I chose to go with the Krylon Fusion flat black on mine (6ish coats at least) and it has held up well and looks pretty good IMO. I like that it doesn't hit me with any glare from the shiny stock silver.
