Aftermarket Head Units

The antenna issue has been discussed quite a bit. The 4Runner has a diversity antenna system - which as best I can tell means that there are two antennas in the vehicle and the factory head unit picked which one had the best signal. I do know that the antenna bundle from the factory harness has two antennas connections (a standard and a smaller one) and a 3rd cord that folks have said is power for an antenna booster.
Going to the aftermarket head unit there are lots of install options available:
1) Get Y-cable connectors to feed both antenna signals into the single antenna input on the Pioneer headunit
2) Provide power to the antenna booster and just plug in the larger (standard) antenna connector
What we did on our x920bt was to connect the blue/white antenna power connector on the headunit to the antenna power connector on our scosche harness - since we didn't want to cut into the factory antenna bundle. It seems to provide ok reception, but we live/drive in an urban area so I can't say how if ended up losing anything doing this way - works for us though.
FWIW - it took us 3+ hours to install our headunit - and that's not counting the time doing the research and soldering up the pioneer cables to the scosche harness. Lots of screws and trim pieces to remove to get it done.

I've always gone with Alpine and I won't go with anything else. I've had their W202, W205, and I just bought a W900bt. I am currently selling my 205 if you're interested.
I think their gui is awesome, super fast iPod connectivity, edgy design, and its got nav and bluetooth. You can watch dvds on the fly and videos from your ipod and with a backup camera it'll show you what's behind you when you put it in reverse. It's audio features are top-notch.
I've had a little experience with pioneer units but to be honest i wasn't impressed with their navigation. However that was years ago so it could've improved considerably.

I have the PIONEER AVH-P3200DVD 2-DIN AUDIO/VIDEO RECEIVER on the way, $298.00 with free shipping. Not sure this unit will fit your 4runner. I chose this one because of the positive feedback I have read, as well as the price. I wanted to put in a double DIN. A single DIN upgrade has a tendency to look like an "install."

Post a pic of the unit when you get it installed. Im curious to see what it looks like especially with the 4runner double din plate. I've always felt that I could get a better double din plate that would make my aftermarket unit flow better with the car.
As soon as I install it, I'll make a thread about it for you all. A day or two away from ordering though...payday's tomorrow. College budget - nawmean?
