Aftermarket mufflers on 3rd Gens

I have a Jardine muffler on mine and it does sound very deep. However in my opinion these trucks just don't sound very good with a muffler. The only one that I have heard that I have really liked is one with a TRD exhaust with TRD headers. I'm sure it would sound great without the headers as well. All the other exhausts just sound "off" to me. Does anyone else feel the same?

I like my TRD Catback, however after denting the resonator in the rear and kinking the pipe a little its not as good, but this is when I first had it on.

Keep in mind that its not just the muffler itself that changes the tone. Length of tail pipe, design, type of tip, etc all will effect the sound. So, its not just the muffler that is effected.

FWIW, I don't mind my Magnaflow, but I am very limited on my exhaust length because of the custom 4-link rear. So, it basically dumps 8" in back of the muffler just in front of the axle. I really wish I had the room to extend the exhaust all the way out behind the rear tire, but unfortunately its impossible with my setup and where the gas tank was moved behind the axle.

well i have flowmaster 44 super, sounds great with little rasp. dont have a tip on it just a dump down pipe out of it. have a vid on my thread but not that good. gets a nice rumble and feel at start up. bought it off a bud that it came off his mustang and he cut the old and put this on for $100.

I want to hear a clip of the Borla XR-1, My friend had that on two of his mustangs and it sounded amazing. He was also pushing 650HP at the rear wheels so I'm sure our 3.4's won't sound anything like that.

Are there pics of your exhaust in your build thread, if not could you post a few? I did a three link on my 4runner and the upper link is where the muffler used to be.

Cherrybomb Vortex. 2.25". Center in offset out.

Around $50 on Ebay and $20 to weld on. Can't beat it for the price.

What is the size of the muffler that you got?

I tried a thrush muffler and a magnaflow with my Monster-Flow high flow cat and they were both way too raspy. I finally got a Flowmaster Super 50 Series and it finally sounds good.
Really good.
I'll post up a vid later when I find my camera.

Just for the record, I am beating this exhaust thing to death. I've wondered if it's a sign to just keep my "in perfect shape" stock muffler. Anywho, I've been searching and looking at videos of different setups now for weeks. A couple of days ago, it was between the cherry bomb vortex, borla xr1, and the dynomax ultra flow, then I thought about the magnaflow 18" but hell I don't know what I want. The thing I've found out is that opinions on these mufflers are completely subjective. For example, one person will bash magnaflow and say they make our trucks sound like tinny civics, and then the next person says it doesn't sound cackly at all and just has a nice rumble throughout the rpms. I personally think age has a lot to do with it.

I wish someone would just tell me something I don't know that would completely sell me on one muffler or another!
