Aftermarket NAV question

I'm going to be installing an Alpine system with NAV. For those that have been there, done that...
Where did you mount your GPS antenna and how did you route it there?

Not sure what your stock stereo or if it has a GPS antenna now, but for my oem JBL Nav, the GPS antenna was straight up and forward of the stereo,under the dash of course.

There is like a little shelf there that it slides into or is stuck in,been awhile but you should see it as the cable is going up to it. It's about 2" x 2" and flat and I took the oem GPS antenna out and put my Pioneer GPS antenna as the leads were different.

Stock stereo is a non-NAV 8 speaker. Since I have planned from the start to replace the entire stereo, I went with the cheapest possible.

Hopefully, the little shelf you describe will be there. If not, I'll fab my own.

I ran mine around the headliner and out the rear hatch. The XM and GPS antennas sit at the inside rear of the passenger side roof rack. I put a pic of how I ran it in the big aftermarket thread towards the end.

I guess you could put the gps antenna up there but alot of extra work and not sure it would work well thru the metal roof. The shark fin on top is a cellular antenna. Not sure which one the XM radio uses .

The factory nav(gps)antenna sits right in the center of the dash above and forward of the 2 center vents .It looks like the tray comes with the gps antenna as it has 2 bolts holding it on. It was stuck on that tray and I just pulled it off and put mine on and didn't even unbolt it. Grant,you probably won't have it but the square space should be there to improvise with double stick tape,double stick foam pads or similar .

The antennas sit outside and on top of the vehicle, and not inside the headliner. The headliner is just where I ran the cables. I tried putting them in the dash, but couldn't get a decent signal, so I ran them back out the rear hatch as I have done for the last ~7 or so years.

Why not just mount both antennas under the dashboard (e.g. on top of the head unit)?

Both antennas??? I only have the one, the GPS antenna. Anyway, I'm just looking for options and to see what works and what doesn't so I don't reinvent the (warped) wheel.

Whoops - I was assuming you were going to have Sirius-XM as well. The GPS antenna will work perfectly under the dashboard.

Although the head unit is capable, I don't care for Sirius-XM.

i ran my GPS antenna for my Pioneer nav to behind the glove box. When you have the dash out, there is this shinny metal bar or rail, i just put my hand and arm in that hole and followed it as far as i could and put the antenna all the way to the right, it's been rock solid and as been accurate for almost a year. Also, i just set it there, i didn't glue it down or anything.

I think i have a pic of the bar i'm talking about...

i just followed that silver bar as far as i could with my arm, so it's above the glove box..
