Aftermarket Stereo

I finally had a weekend off and decided to tackle sending the backup camera feed from my factory rear view mirror to my Pioneer z130bt head unit's 7 inch display. I wanted to keep the picture in the mirror as well as having it viewed on my screen, but, i guess you can do what you want. My buddy Jimmy C's came over yesterday and we tackled it. He helped me out a lot, because i was reading the toyota wiring diagram backwards..or upside down...

Most of the guys on the forum have the Toyota OEM navigation system and then put in an aftermarket nav, this means they had different plugs in the dash, and had a plug i think it was the g20 plug that they could tap into to get the video signal. See Antman's thread for a how to on OEM Nav. The sr5's with out navigation do not have this luxury, or at least i don't think they do. I had to pull down a bunch of stuff and then tap into the wire, i wanted to keep it all looking good and keep the rear view picture working. Also, to elaborate. When you are testing to make sure that the are indeed tapping into the correct wires, you will need to plug the mirror back into the harness, because we think that the feed get's it's power from the harness. Without it being plugged in, we did not get the video feed, we only got the reverse sensing feed. Once we stripped back the wires on the video feed, plugged it in, did we get the video to appear on the screen.

Working from Antman and Sp8ball's backup camera switch mod:
Backup Camera Mod

I stole this pic to show you guys: You need to pull down the sun glass holder and pull this wire out of the rear view camera.

Here are the wires you need for the reverse sensing wire and for the display video feed. Make sure you have the plug oriented correctly, and are grabbing the correct wires!

I personally tapped into the wires, then ran them across the headliner by the windshield. Then down the drivers side A-pillar, under dash, and into the back of the trucks dash.. Then i connected the reverse sensing wire into the purple wire on my head unit(it was marked by Pioneer, your model may be different) And then i spliced the other wire into a RCA cable and plugged that into the backup camera input, which was a RCA plug.

Note, my RCA cable actually had 2 wires inside of it. A red and a white wire. The white didn't do anything, and when i tried to ground it, it made the signal go away. So i just taped off the white wire, and used the red for the feed.

Good luck boys!

Just ordered a complete system yesterday with new Kenwood with the Garmin built in nav system. Has CD/DVD/XM/ slash all of the things you can stream through your smart phone (Pandora, etc). Got new speakers, wiring harnesses, and the unit will use a cable that connects in to the steering wheel controls. I have been a Garmin person for quite a few years so that was the deciding factor for me, as to brand. You do not need a superior system in a 4wheel drive vehicle with large tires creating noise that would override your ability to here the finer points. As for my car, it is a Lexus with the Mark Levinson system. That is quite a bit different!!

Barry, I sent you a pm with questions, did you get it? Pricing, model and wondering if you still have all the steering wheel control functions. What shop did the install?

Thanks, Keith

does anyone know I were to use a aftermarket head unit, will all the steering wheel functions all work on a 2013 sr5 with the axxess aswc?

Yes. It all works. Even if the unit doesn't map them automatically, you can customize the operation of each button individually. A few of my buttons don't work right cause the guy who did it, did it wrong. I've been emailing tech support about it just in the last week or so. I'm planning on taking my console apart soon and getting the axxess unit working again.

no prob. I'll copy and paste what the guy said via email below. I contacted them because a few of my buttons don't work, and i was wondering if the unit i had is fine, or if i needed to buy a newer model unit.

Matt,

Good afternoon. The ASWC and ASWC-1 are the same, other than the ASWC-1 has the ability to work with the 2013 Nissan Altima Sedan, and the ASWC does not. Either will work in your 2011 Toyota 4Runner. It sounds like the ASWC programmed properly, as the main functions are working. Do the Bluetooth buttons do anything to the radio (i.e. change sources, mute, seek, etc…)? If so, check out pages 16 and 19 for information on how to “remap” certain buttons. If you wish to make your “Bluetooth” button work as designed, simply follow the directions for “Remapping SWC Buttons”. Page 19 provides a list of commands, and the order of each button. If there are any buttons that need to be “skipped”, you would simply press Volume Up for each button that is not being programmed. I hope this helps.

He also provided a PDF which i will attach to this post

Matt,
Good afternoon and thanks for this information. The “Answer”, “Hang up”, and “Voice command” buttons are the Bluetooth buttons for your vehicle. If working properly, these buttons should allow you to pick up and hang up calls. The “voice command” button is one that many aftermarket radios do not accept, so, this button may/may not be able to be programmed. Do any of these buttons control anything on the radio (i.e. changing source, muting, seeking, etc…)? If so, we can easily change these buttons to work as intended, through the “remapping” procedure.
As for the intermittent operation issue, this could be due to a poor connection of the ASWC wire to the vehicle’s harness. Do you know if any sort of connectors were used when connecting the ASWC wires (i.e. t-taps, crimp caps, scotch locks, etc…)? Do you know where the vehicle’s “reference ground” wire is connected (Blue, Pin 6 of 20 pin factory harness)? If this wire is not grounded properly, this could cause issue with the unit not functioning in the proper fashion.

I would like to change factory's car stereo in my SR5 2008 with Pioneer unit.

There are two questions.

1. Do I need a dash kit like this one?

2. There is no dash kit for SR5, is the Limited the same?

Thank you in advance.

I'd try the 4th gen thread - also buy it from crutchfield if the price is close and they'll include the install equipment. But it should be easy to find via crutchfield or sonic electronix.

no idea, since i have a 5th gen. I would make sure that the dash kit says for my year. That one you linked says for 07. it's possible they are lazy and haven't tried it on an 08, or it's possible that it wont fit. good luck, and yea try this in the 4th gen section, or maybe even the audio sub section that is not in a Generation specific section.

I'm installing a pioneer AVH-P8400BH, Rear 10" screen, backup camera this weekend. I'll do a little write up for my build thread & this thread. Doing the bypass mod on the headunit too.

Two things - I found the reverse light wire in pictures for a limited in this thread, but i have an SR5 non-JBL an I don't have a factory rear camera so will I still have that 5 wire plug with the red wire in this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/934713-post361.html? Also will I need the VSS wire (speed sensor)?

that photo you linked...i'm pretty sure he has a limited. i have no idea if those wires would be there or not. at least its not hard to take the dash apart, so you can look and see. Good luck. look for my posts that also show which wires you need for a SR5, hopefully you have them. check back a few pages. Although maybe what i showed you wont have...

Link to pic of the headlight dim wire?

Hoping for the reverse wire to be there.
