Nice upgrade! Do the bluetooth controls still work with the new unit? I'm not sure if the bluetooth if part of the stock units or some module in between and just sends the display info to the units.

Ended up painting the Metra dash kit like doodman was going to do using satin black Krylon fusion and satin clear . Looks way better IMO and going to do the 2 silver parts under the nav too.

So, did end up painting my dash kit flat black w/ Krylon fusion, but the darn thing keeps resulting in a gritty texture instead of the smooth Flat Black texture that it's supposed to produce. I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

I guess I'll have to sand it down good, clean it w/ acetone and re-do it. If you might have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong, I'd love to hear them.

The phone and voice buttons had to be manually programmed thru the Axxess controller.They give you what wire colors you have to tap into on the old harness and is updated for the 2010 4runner.

I just lightly sanded/cleaned it and gave it 3 coats of satin black Krylon Fusion waiting 10-15 minutes between coats and then a good heavy coat of Krylon satin clearcoat.
At first it looked kinda orange peel texture but the satin clearcoat just flows out and looks great after about an hour or two.
I did put a little nick in it when installing the vents as it's so soft til it cures hard in a week.

I installed my AVIC Z120BT nav over the weekend. It was not a day at the beach as I had to use adapters(TOYO-01 AND Axxess AWSC) to use the Factory JBL amp and 15 speaker system. All speakers and steering wheel buttons work as before. Don't ask for a step by step as I just followed the directions and the wiring diagrams.I got lost a couple of times!I have wired stereos before but not using existing factory amp and speakers so I stumbled thru it in about 6 or 7 hours.

Oh yea , the "Party Mode" still works so the switching must be in the amp as I used the existing JBL amp. I also did the yellow wire parking brake bypass per youtube and everything works while in motion including dvd playing, all handsfree phone stuff and nav programming.

For anyone doing the JBL upgrade to aftermarket in the future, the speed sensor wire is a green wire, pin number 5 on a 20 pin NAV connector. What differentiates this plug is it's a 9 over 11 pin connector . Took me awhile to find it in the wiring diagrams. I did'nt need to find the reverse wire because the factory camera would'nt work so no camera yet.

Absolutely lovin' this Pioneer and glad I changed my mind from the Kenwood!The new Pioneer Z120BT software works flawless with the iPhone and iPod and even streams Pandora thru the HU and has a free app for it.

WOW, that is a job well done. Very impressive.

Well ,there are at least 3 different stereo combinations for the 5th Gen 4Runner that I know of plus some port installed ones.Which one do you have.They have different harnesses and connectors so they will be different . The ones I posted up(TOYO-01 and AXXESS AWSC) work with the JBL 15 speaker nav system using the existing JBL amp.

I called installer.com tech support and did research to find out what I needed.

good info, thanks again.. i also called installer.com for harness info and think ive got it all straight..

he asked if my speakers or stereo have a JBL badge on the cover, they dont, so i assume i dont have the 15 speaker JBL system w. amp and therefore wont use the TOYO-01 harness.

my factory stereo option is 'DJ' and i live in so. cal if that helps at all.

these are the parts i ordered, well see if i screwed it up.

I and a few other people researched and found out the stock wiring harnesses and several other things are competely different on JBL and Non JBL Runners.We swapped pics of the connectors and it was a no go.For one, the stock Nav has a separate JBL amp in the back right side that I'm using with the Pioneer. It could be used on previous years Toyotas with JBL Nav systems with their amp with a little tweaking as they are very simular.

I already sold mine on Feebay for $800 anyways!

looks like i managed to buy all the right harnesses and everything looks and sounds great...

- IPod Works
- Steering wheel controls work
- Sirius Radio works ( not using 'sharkfin' )
- OEM backup camera works and displays on HU and Mirror. You dont have to wait for the unit to boot to get an image.. if you start the truck and put it in reverse, you will see the camera display before the unit is normally done booting.
- Party Mode does not work but the new HU sounds better than party mode ever did!
- Metra Dash kit fits and looks great

now im debating on getting the 200$ z120bt upgrade disk, or just wait for one to hit the torrents.

im happy with the upgrade.:bluejump:

I can not get over all that dead space on the left and right of the HU. I think a sweet mod would be to cut out docking stations for your iPhone on the left and your remote on the right. anything to fill that emptiness!

yeah, i was a little concerned about that dead space too when i got the dash kit. but you really dont notice it when you look at it in person, installed.

in pictures, you get a tight shot of the HU and install so it blows the context.

when you look at it in the wider picture, like when youre sitting in the seat, it doesnt look so vast a waste of space.

besides, there are few other viable options for an OEM look double din dash kit.

Well I finally got my Kenwood 516 installed. It has the ipod cable and the Nav module. It works pretty sweet and alot smoother than last years model. I ordered it from Crutchfield and got the adapter for free.

For the Bluetooth, unfortunately I had to use a separate Parrot kit, since those are the only ones that are compatible with Nextel's direct connect phones.

All I need now is the steering wheel control adapter, some speakers and an amp down the line and I am good to go. And yes, the temp is reading correctly, a beautiful 111' in S Cali.

Fits perfect. I am really happy with it. The 2010 Kenwoods are so much nicer and easier to use than the 2009 or older.

Kenwoods are top of the line, and I agree that the 2010s are much improved, but after researching this forum and others, I went with the new Pioneer AVIC-X920BT. WOW!

Took Doodman's advice and got the Metra kit and had my installer bypasss the parking brake so I can get navigation on the run. VERY pleased with the features. Only thing I lost was the Party mode, but gained so much more! There's two new features on the X920BT that I really like: Music Sphere and a link for Pandora. I think it blows the Z series away! For those still debating on a nav system, I'd highly recommend the X920BT (YouTube - Pioneer @ CES 2010 (1/4): AVIC-X920BT). Cheers!

If I end up getting a 4Runner, I was probably going to change out the stereo to a nice aftermarket with NAV. Should I bother getting the upgraded stereo or just stick with the basic one that comes with it? Are there things that will carry over to the aftermarket unit that I won't have if I don't get the upgraded one (eg: Bluetooth, stereo controls, etc.)?
I probably wouldn't get it for a year or so after getting the truck.

Get a smart phone with built in GPS/nav, a huge memory card, some decent after market speakers, and call it good.

I love my factory Nav because everything works and it comes with a warranty, but you can get a new android-based phone that can handle all your music, your GPS/Nav, bluetooth streaming, and still make calls... for 200 dollars. :wow2:

There's two new features on the X920BT that I really like: Music Sphere and a link for Pandora. I think it blows the Z series away! For those still debating on a nav system, I'd highly recommend the X920BT (YouTube - Pioneer @ CES 2010 (1/4): AVIC-X920BT). Cheers!

Ahhhh....Blows the Z series away? Not!
I've had the Z120BT for a while now and love it.
The new Z-series Z120BT's are Pioneers top of the line flagship models and have the same software as the X920BT's with a larger higher res screen and plenty of other upgrades. There is a firmware upgrade for the Z110BT's to bring them up to the Z120's albeit $200.
