Shouldn't go into limp mode, if I remember right the 2GR-FE's in the 5th gen have an "updated" Air Pump Inlet to prevent moisture getting in, also the software runs the pump in reverse occasionally to blow moisture out.

Your wealth of knowledge is greatly appreciated here!
What would we do here without the resident Toyota Tech gurus? :bravo:

Thanks for this. There's all kinds of hollering about this very expensive repair at tacomaworld.com

Hopefully the later 2nd Gen Tacoma's got this update.

UPDATE - partouq.com and toyotapartsdeal.com both show 176100C030 to be the air pump for the 2013/2014/201/2016 4Runner. Wouldn't the part number have changed if an updated inlet were added to prevent moisture intake?

I believe the 5th gen is the 1GR-FE(4.0L)
The 2GR is a 3.5L... also the 1GR-FE in the 5th gens are dual vvt where as the older ones( pre '09) are not. Im no tech but had to do some research cuz I was obsessing over a supercharger .

DERP! I mis-typed... I meant 1GR-FE, glad you caught that. :)

As far as I know the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE's have had the updated inlet for a few years now. Mainly due to the issues that were encountered with these 2UZ-FE, 1UR-FE, and 3UR-FE air pumps, that's why the software will run the pumps occasionally in reverse on shutoff and on start up to blow moisture out.

I have not heard/seen a significant number of these pumps failing on the 5th generation so far, but I'm just one person.

So that explains the odd SAIP noise at shut down. It's in reverse!
