Air tank setup

Just wondering, what dose everybody use to air up their tires or what dose everyone do? Do you and air tank? Whats your setup? Trying to get slme ideas ofwhatto do.

I’ve I think tried the gammut. Everything from an AC pump out of an old ford sedan(York?) converted and plumbed into a sealed tube bumper, to hard mounted 12v compressor plumbed into a tank mounted under the rig, to just a non-mounted 12v tire inflator that clips on the battery or plugs into the cig lighter port.

I currently run the non-mounted 12v pump, but I don’t air down very often.

There are a few brands for each budget. The more you spend the better the name tag and often the faster they pump.

Viair and Smitty built are pretty popular. ARB and Harbor freight as well.

i threw this together for a quick trip to moab but longterm it will be mounted where the spare was. I had most of it lying around and its slow but works

A 5" diameter tank will fit in perfect if you move the fuel filter but a 5" is hard to find. I have a 6" 3 gallon that I'm eventually going to squeeze in there but other things are more pressing right now. My pump is mounted and wired in with a relay to the rear quarter panel by the gas cap, there's a lot of empty space in there just like the other side that has the storage compartment. I cut the panel and it velcros back in place. there's room for the pump, hose and some accessories. Will post pictures of it tonight if I get time.

I'm planning on running a viair constant duty pump with a 2.5-3 gal tank mounted where the fuel tank was (f150 fuel tank swap). All air lines will be dot rated semi truck air brake hose (tons of it at my work) with quick connects front and rear. Currently I'm running a viair battery clip pump, it works ok but need something better.

All kidding aside, I have both, a VIAIR compressor with a 2.5G tank and CO2. I have a 20# tank and picked up a 5# tank 9new) real cheap.
The CO2 is VERY FAST but will run out at some point, the compressor is mind numbing slow even with a tank.
Only one compressor is fast and its CO2 fast but its $1800 (to rich for me) if ya got the money check out oasis The Most Powerful DC Air Compressors in the World - Oasis Mfg.

A ‘Powertank’ can be ‘made’ for ~250, depending on the quality of parts you choose.

The most expensive is going to be the regulator, 150 shipped from wheelers.

I would NEVER go with an actual PT; for a couple reasons. 1) most places just exchange tanks, not refill. (Read: bye bye pretty powder coated tank.) 2) it’s way to damn expensive for what it is.

I put an Arb Dual in the rear cubby. Cut a hole in the lid for the quick disconnect to poke out, drilled a few other small holes for ventilation. There's no air tank, but it still really cranks out the volume and airs up my 33" tires quickly.

My wife has a Viair system on hers with a tank. (edit: it's 2.5 gallons) With the tank run up to 150 psi, it still usually just lasts for the first tire - from there on it's just running at pump speed.

Ive been using the Viar 400p for like 6 years. Ive been very happy with it and the auto shut off makes a very fast fill. I used a china superflow for years before that and it worked okay but the cord and other things fell apart with time.


I probley air down more tha most here maybe once every month or 2 and its been a great fit(with ex deflate kit). The only plus to a hard mounted setup is one less thing taking or storage I guess but I like being able to move my $200+ pump into other vehicles if I need.

ARB twin is nice, dare I say fast. I wouldn't worry about trying to fit a huge tank for airing up tires, it's basically worthless for that.

then you're going to be blown away when you use CO2.

‘Huge tank’?

My 20lb tank can be easily mounted on my roll bar, not taking up much space at all.

Plus, it’s quiet; and can run anything I have in the truck currently.

Co2 setup and fuhgetaboutit. I spent less than $120 for the 150psi regulator, hose and digital inflator. Got a 20lb and 5lb tank for free from a buddy getting out of beer brewing.

I can fill my tires back up way faster than my viair compressor.
