Airbag module recall

So I got the official letter from Toyota a few weeks ago.

where is this module located? I tried looking it up, but couldn't find anything for this year. I see previous years had them in the center console/dash area. are these the same?

im not fond of the idea of turning my rig over to them for any work, even if it is a recall. I was hoping, that as a shop, they would allow me to install it myself. the letter states "about an hour for the 4runner" so it must not be too difficult.


you guys all get your letters too? I assumed yes, but haven't seen the expected thread on it yet.

Got my letter but I'm not anxious to turn it over to the dealer as I have previous recalls too.

right. that is my feeling also.
I remember they came out with another one for throttle/brake or something. but that they tend to do all the recalls when they get a rig in, even when the customers specifically asks them not too.
and, they say its not reversible. I would be pissed, and that's what I would like to avoid.

You're saying there's been a second recall on the pedal/floormat issue?
 
What is this recall? I don't see any recalls listed for mine when I log onto the Toyota owners site, and I haven't gotten a letter. I have a 2007 with side airbags if it matters.

according to my letter, its only for certain 04-06 4runners.
 
Problem is that they will not let you do it yourself.

Recalls have to be done by trained/certified technicians. They might not even sell you the updated part if you asked (though it's probably something like $1300 for the SRS ECU even if they did.)

The Recall is for 4Runners with Side-Curtain Airbags, if your vehicle doesn't have those it's not eligible.

There's a 90L (Pedal Chop) and BST (Software Update as a result of the unintended acceleration stuff) Recall for the 4Runners. I usually specify very heavily NOT To do those two at the time of the visit.

I understand the hesitance to avoid the dealership. But if I remember correctly, the recall is due to the possibility of the side curtain airbags deploying when not needed. So it's not entirely frivolous.

I just had mine done yesterday. Took about 1.5 hours while I roamed the dealership and sat in every car I could find unlocked. I will say, I was very impressed with this dealer. I moved to a new area last year and this is the third dealer I've tried locally, and the first one I've liked. They did my side curtain airbag recall and told me about the gas pedal / software update. They were very polite when I declined the pedal surgery and didn't try to upsell me on anything else. Several salesmen greeted me, but none tried to sell me a new car while my 05 was in service. I won't do official endorsements but if anyone is in the northern Delmarva area you can PM me for the dealer's name.

I was told that the software update is for the engine ECU and basically ignores throttle input if it receives throttle and brake at the same time. I was told that the software update and gas pedal surgery is a package deal and can't be done individually. Service writer said that this is because of how it is marked complete in the computer and it would incorrectly show that I had completed the full recall.

yes, I understand that's what its for.
but, according to Toyota the airbags will NOT deploy accidentally, as long as you wait 6 seconds after starting the engine. apparently once the SRS light goes out, you are good to go.

which is what I have been doing all along.

The SRS Ecu is located under the dash, in front of the cup holders in the center console. All the air bag wires are yellow and they plug into it. It is mounted right on the transmission tunnel.

though, according to blackworks above, they wont give it to me, so I wouldn't be able to install it myself anyways.

I'd highly suggest keeping it out of the dealership if you have the pedal chop recall still. I purchased mine after the fact and its incredibly annoying to have my pedal about half the size it was from the factory. Depending on the shoes in wearing my foot will slip off the gas because the surface area of the pedal is so small as they cut the bottom off.

Oh trust me I know, I've seen the pedal modification on all the vehicles when my coworkers do them. I've also played with the vehicles after the BST and I'm not a 100% sold on it for my 4Runner (wish I could borrow a BST flashed V8 4Runner to test some stuff off-road.)

It's just easier for me to make sure it doesn't happen since I'm a tech. :)
 
What parts of the vehicle need to be disassemble to do the recall? If it is in the rear then the drawer system has to come out.

Meh....

It's a recall for safety and Toyota dealers have done me right for years. They may charge more than DIY or a small shop, but I believe in the quality and expertise they have in Toyota's.

It's my understanding they can ONLY do work requested even if it is a recall so no random accelerator chop if you don't want it.

... and Who The F&$k doesn't let their car run for at least 6 seconds before they drive?!?!? Crazy, IMO, that this even happened. I'm not racing to Toyota for this, but no issues with a Toyota dealer doing it for me. In Denver I've had great luck with Mountain States Toyota.
