Airbag recall question

I had mine done a while ago and was very hesitant with the thought of them removing the dash since I have a lot of mods. They didn't have to remove the dash to do the work. They only removed the glovebox and some other items on the left side of the dash. No issues and it only took a couple of hours. Honestly, I would have questioned whether or not they did anything if it wasn't for the clean section on an otherwise dusty dashboard.

Dropped off the rig at the dealership at 7:45 in Pasadena, also ran into [MENTION=115572]DesertCanyons[/MENTION] who was also dropping off his rig at the same time. Got mine back at 11:30am which also included an oil change. Nothing creaks or rattles at all. [MENTION=115572]DesertCanyons[/MENTION], how did yours end up?

I did the same in Glendale 2 weeks ago. Dropped it before work and picked it up after. No squeaks or rattles so far.

Will Drop Mind on Wednesday at Avondale Toyota will see how it goes. Very concern on such a dangerous situation that I took them that long to inform us. Wonder how is the driver side is doing. Does it take people dying to inform us. Maybe I will get a new one that does not have that type of air bag..but I like mind a lot

The recall has been announced for several years, we have all been patiently waiting for our number to come up............personally I rarely have a passenger.

Interesting thread, got my notice last Friday. Like a few others here I live in NOVA and have been searching for a good dealer since I purchased my '14 new up in MD.

Drive a wrecker while going back to school so have had the "pleasure" of dealing with most the dealers in the area. Not sure on posting specific dealer names but besides my own bad experiences with two in particular I've had to tow more than a couple vehicles back to a dealer because whatever was done needed "re-done".

Also not thrilled with the idea of a dash drop which my now closest dealer informed would be part of the process. All that said, any fellow NOVA members in the Loudoun/western Fairfax have a recommendation?

It's funny we have a some great guys (sadly not all in one shop anymore) to do aftermarket work but dealers are hit or miss :hand:

Just a note that you may have thought of already. If you add shims to the transfer skid plate, make sure the plate in front of it, the transmission skid plate, overlaps the transfer case plate in the same manner as it was intended. If you slide over a rock, the rock should slide by the overlap point to the next plate that follows smoothly, without hitting an edge and peeling the next, following plate off of the frame. IOW, moving from front to rear, each plate should overlap the next plate from below the next plate. :wof:

A lot of people have had this issue with the exhaust pipe making contact with the RCI skid plate. You don't need to add shims. Just put a hose clamp around the exhaust hanger rubber that is across from where it contacts on the driver's side. Tighten the hose clamp a little and it will lift the exhaust pipe enough to keep it from contacting the skid plate. I did this about 3 years ago and have had no problems with it hitting the skid since then.

After speaking with my dealership (which is one of the better ones) they confirmed that the dash does NOT get removed. Just as you mentioned in your post, its the glove box and some other trim pieces plus 2.5 hours of labor to complete the recall.

Recall completed on my 2016 yesterday. Wife took it to the dealership. The night before, I had her read this thread so she was armed with information. Work took a little over 3 hours. She checked the dash and glove box for fitment and said there were no rattles on the way home. I also checked everything when I got home and did a drive as well. No issues thus far. Great thread.

The replacement procedure can easily be found on the internet.
Those instructions do not mention anything about a dash removal, but does show the access through the glove box.
Also, keep in mind that these vehicles are not made in Korea. Anyone that fiddles with their 4Runner knows that things go back together very well on the 4Runner.

Had mine done yesterday and they took the dash and most of the center console out. They had to have me come back in and unlock my console vault so they could remove it. Originally they said it would be a 2 hour job, was more like 6.

Glad I saw this. I will leave console vault open and empty.

on another airbag note, just read where Honda is recalling more cars for the airbag issue. seems that the airbags they used to replace the defective airbags are also defective, and they are now recalling over a million of those too. can't make this stuff up!

I hope Toyota is not lying to us and the driver side air bag is fine. Otherwise I will be looking to replace the car with 2017 or newer model. I just took my car to get the airbag worked on today...

i just got a similar recall on my GX. they said its a half day job and providing me a loaner. now i am going to ask if they do have to remove the dash.

Airbag replaced in under an hour

Had to go down out of the mountains to Phoenix, AZ so it was time to setup an appointment and get the airbag replacement done. Removed the vault, guns, rifle and magazines & cleared out all the crap in the glove box, etc. and wiped down a couple years of dust & crud on the dash, dumped out those loaded plastic floormats etc.
They asked if I wanted the dirtyass '13 LTD modded rig washed. I said God does it when it is in the rain, otherwise it is in my garage 99% of the time up here living deep in the forest since I don't need to get to places where they have stoplights. The floormats only get cleaned when there is raccoon shit on my boots. I kill them all the time.

Believe it or not, it was done in under an hour! I ate 3 of their donuts. And, they cleaned up the dash and the interior of the windshield. I'll be dipped. Last time I took it to Right Toyota in north Scottsdale was probably 4 or 5 years ago when it was in warranty/service mode. The GM down there runs a good business, that is why I bought it there.

Had mine replaced yesterday. Dealer is walking distance to my office. Left it all day, so not sure how long it took I'm pretty sure they didn't remove the dash. I couldn't tell anything was done. I'm relying on their word that they actually did any work on it. It was nice and clean after, so I know they at least cleaned it.

Mine was done here in Ontario. I don't have any rattles on the passenger side but I have a rattle on on Drivers side now. Looks like the issue is the white vent piece under the steering wheel. Mine is loose. Can someone check if that part has play in it?

Only car I've seen that went together better than my 4Runner was my wife's 2004 Volvo S60. That car was super easy to work on, with the parts fitting together in ways that were pretty cool. The oil pan could be dropped without removing a cross member. Shocks and struts were simple, etc.

90 minutes

Went in for the Oil change and I was asked if I wanted to do the Airbag. Service manager said it would take and additional 2 hours so it would be 3 hours total. I said I was in a rush, but after a 1/2 hour he came back in and said he could do the airbag and get me out in an hour and he was right. 90 minutes for Airbag and oil. Could not even tell they touched the dash.
