Airbox mods for idiots

Next time you get an idea like this go get a piece of paper and a sharpie
or a crayon and draw it out and then post it and ask before you use
any power tools on your Runner..

Now you should drill some holes in the bottom of it to let the water drain out that will come in through the hole you just drilled...
 
Unless he's wheeling it....and I mean driving through lakes, rivers or flying through mud holes....he's not gonna do any harm to his truck.

That being said, if you do plan on doing any of the above....the deck plate should definetaly be installed.

Tons of guys are driving around with Deckplate, ISR mods, and they haven't blown up their 4Runners......can we give the guy a break???!! ;)
 
I install my deckplate every time I wash my truck cause Ive seen a few drips of water in the airbox before when I didnt have it on. So youre gonna wanna double up on the tape if you wash it. But frankly you ruined your air box. your best option would be to find two smaller deck plates and place them side by side in a way that will eliminate those ugly little holes
 
as stated before, I don't really take it off road much. I did buy it myself and i plan on doing a cold air intake so i will just be getting rid of this anyway. I have a K&N inside. I run my fourwheeler and dirtbike with open airboxes and haven't had an issue with water. I don't think ill have any problems. the cold air intake won't even have an air box around it.

Then it won't be a 'cold air intake'. It will be a 'hot engine air intake' and your power will go down and you'll probably have more spark knock. Not exactly the idea behind a 'cold air intake'.

I think you're a cool dude... even though you jacked up your airbox. You've taken a lot of crap in this thread and it didn't even ruffle your feathers. :thumb3:
 
just wanted to revisit this thread and say that the drilled holes along with the my muffler rusting off, I have gotten on average 1 mpg better in town and 2 mpg better on the highway. It was hard because I always wanted to accelerate harder but now it is much easier to drive conservatively which is most likely the cause of the mpg increase.

Since the last time you posted (Feb) to now the temp has gone up 30 degrees, which means less friction, less rolling resistance in the tires, and probably a different fuel mix (not on winter blend anymore), which probably accounts for your increase. My mileage will drop 2-3 MPG in the winter in every car I have (and every car I've ever had that I checked).

Ya that is very true. but there is still slight improvement. My fuel economy during the winter is about 19. during the summer when I moved to minnesota I got just under 21. Now I'm getting 22. These are just highway numbers. I also brought my 350 lbs bike on a trip with me and still got about 19.

Just a quick question...I did the deck plate mod (half way). The deck plate hasn't come in yet and I was wondering if its okay to drive in the rain. Nothing crazy, just driving in the rain on the highway or streets. Would water get in? I looked under the hood and didn't see any water, but I'm just worried.

This would normally be true unless you are me. I had a Corolla AE86 where I tracked and Auto-x and drove it pretty hard in the summer, hard enough that people are surprised at the crappy MPG. Once the winter hits I put on my winters and I get about 15% better MPG, this is not including the track days! :lol:
