AISIN Manual locking hubs

The advantage - No wear and tear on the cv joints and spider gears. Less rolling resistance. less parts to produce vibrations. Better MPG's (ever so slightly).

The disadvantage - The output shaft is smaller then the ADD but if you wanted the axle to break, I would want it to break at the hub as opposed to having it break at the in the diff housing.

My deal is that during the winter, I keep my hubs locked all the time. I let the ADD do its job that way, I don't have to get out of the 4runner to lock my hubs in bad or inclement weather.

During the spring, summer, and fall time I keep the hubs unlocked and lock then when I go off roading.

Oh yea the inclement weather, it's so gnarly! :lookout:

Just curious, but what is the difference between a 2nd gen spindle and a 3rd gen spindle. I have a 96 4runner (limited) and was wondering why 2nd gen spindles would not work on a 3rd gen for a manual hub swap? I have a friend that has spindles from 93 Tacoma that he was going to give me, I was really hopping these would work on my 96 4runner.

I will keep my fingers crossed till I get someones reply.

no such thing as a 93 tacoma. it's a toyota pickup. as for the difference. i know the part of the hub body are interchangable but the only spindle the 4runner takes is its own or a tacoma from 95.5-2004

Help!!!

Right now I'm in the middle of the project to press out the hub. I brought the 7 ton craftsman press and attempted to press the hub out. One problem the press rod keep going through the center of the socket, sdo I place a smaller socket in large sock and try pressing it again, got the hub to come out about 1/4 inch before the small socket deform (both socket was Snap-On impact sockets) and allow the press to lean to the side. Can someone that did the press work them self tell me the setup you used to press the hub out and back in? Help me please I'm stuck...Thank you

If you got it to move 1/4" then the toughest part is over. Keep on doing what your doing.

Use a big bolt on the big socket. Don't use two sockets.

So just place a bolt in the socket and do the pressing?

Also how does the axle hub oil seal come off? Do I just pry on it?

Thanks for your help

I used the bolt in the socket. I guess the hub is very stuck, I turned the breaker bar until I cant turn it anymore, even the front of the press rounded. Is there anyone that I close to LA that can help?

The socket you used was smaller then the bearing, right? Just make sure that your pushing just on the hub and not the bearing race.

You should be able to take the spindle to a machine shop to have it pressed out. Or even take it to a Toyota dealer.

hey there, how did you install that spacers on with the locking hubs? everything im reading states that if you have manual hubs you cant use the hub-centric spacers that you are using? it looks so good! i realy want to do this to my tacoma. I already have manual locking hubs on my 98. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

I notched out my spacers to work with the locking hubs. I will try to find a picture of what i did.

I bought the manual hubs from a friend that did a SAS.. Parts were laying around.. guess I missed a piece! I did the Manual hub upgrade on mine over the weekend.. well that and a few other things... I am missing something though, I don't have anything to hold the CV's in the hub.. I am searching the internet for a picture of what the Center hub bolt looks like.. there isn't a snap ring that holds it in place, so it's got to be a bolt in the tip.. can you please confirm. A picture of that bolt inside the CV's tip would be nice so I know what size washer would be really helpful. :D

The bolt is a 8 x 1.25mm Find a washer that just covers the splines of the axle.

The bolt length is 20mm or so.
