It was most likely ABS, just as ClockWork mentioned. Ask her if she felt the break pedal "pulse" under her foot. if she was holding the breaks down, the ABS system kicks in and "pulses" the breaks so that they don't lock up, hence A.nti-lock B.raking S.ystem
Glad she's ok and more importantly, the truck's ok. ha
Brakes stop a car, breaks are what the teacher gives you when the dog ate your homework. Just sayin".

I didn't mean to criticize anyone or sidetrack a useful thread by suggesting that spelling counts, which it doesn't on a casual forum. Those thousands of late nights reading student compositions must have taken their toll.
Back to the point: I came around a corner two weeks ago to find two cars spun out on black ice, one blocking each lane. I had no alternative but to slam on the brakes and hope ABS would bail me out, just as it did for the OP's wife.
The technology made quite a ruckus, but it stopped the TE in time, and in a straight line, despite the fact that I was still in the turn when I hit the brakes. Very impressive and confidence-inspiring to have that system on the Runner, especially since my wife and daughter occasionally drive it, and are often passengers in it.

I was driving across the mountains to get to my parents' house today. Some of these roads are ridiculous with steep grades and tight turns. I was really impressed with the transmission logic as far as holding the lower gear when I was coming down the mountains. The whole drive, which I've seen eat up SUV and truck brakes before, was very uneventful with very little brake or gas input needed by me. Love this vehicle.

Brake assist will take the pedal away from your foot! Maybe the bumps were from expansion joints. I find that the ABS to have a much higher pulse frequency than in my prior rides. It seems 'smoother' feeling anyway.
It has saved me a few times. Glad your family was safe.
Don't sweet the speeling be, I caint speel worth a carp. My grammer more awful than not. But I can work me some differential equations like a mofo.
