AlpineCoder's Build Thread / Intro

Hi all,

I've been a frequent lurker, and finally signed up for an account. I figured there was no better way to make introductions than to start with my build thread (unfortunately I've already done quite a bit of building, but I still have some upcoming projects that I'll update with, starting with a Shrockworks rear bumper / tire carrier hopefully next week).

I hope you enjoy, questions and comments are welcome.

Yeah, it wasn't easy finding one with such low mileage (I bought it 1.5 years ago at 95K).

Later I decided to get one of the wireless boxes and move the winch controller under the hood. I decided to upgrade to 0/1 gauge welding cable while I was at it.

Thanks. Yeah, I really like the Airaid setup. You get the normal benefits of the ISR mod with a nice clean look on the engine. As an added bonus, if you're crafty with your extensions, you can even change your plugs without taking it off.

Nice rig, AlpineCoder. That 1/0 welding cable is some seriously heavy duty stuff... You're definitely giving the winch full access to the power it needs.

Congrats on a tasteful build, finding a low mileage platform to start with, and way to get out and use it... CO is a big playground.

The previous owner of my truck installed a really cheap cold air intake with a cone filter on it, it didn't even have a heat shield. I'm getting a stock air box but I still needed the stock tube so I figured I might as well go ahead and upgrade while I was at it. The airaid setup seems like exactly what I need.

Yeah, they're pretty silly large, but I figured since I was building cables anyhow, may as well get ones beefy enough for the winch's full load (400+ amps). Bonus is I have some left over for my planned dual battery and big 3 upgrades. Building those cables was pretty entertaining too, never done any soldering with a torch before :nerd:

In preparation for the new rear bumper (which should be shipping sometime? :redbrick I took off my hitch and spare mounting hardware, and found a bit of rust growing on the rear end of my frame and around the rear body mounts. Decided I should take care of it before mounting the bumper up, so off to the garage I head, and I remembered to snap some pics...

Nice and shiny and ready for the bumper

Overall not the most fun project I've ever done, but good to take care of a small problem before it becomes a big one. Not too hard either, both sides took 3 hours or so including dry time between coats.

ShrockWorks rear bumper and tire carrier arrived and have been installed. I don't have too many pics of the install itself because I was trying to get everything done quickly after work (and before work the next day), but it was pretty straight forward. Hardest part was drilling holes in the frame upside down under the truck. Looks really good so far, I'll update with more pics when I get up to the mountains.

Few more updates, decided now that the rear bumper is no longer chrome, the chrome on the grill and fender flares looked funny. So out came the PlastiDip:

I also decided that the OME 906 springs I had in the rear sagged more than I liked under the weight of the new bumper. A quick ride over to Toytec later, out come the 906s, in go 890s and some stainless extended brake lines while I'm under there:

Finally I decided I didn't like the plate mounted in the center of the spare tire, so I moved it over to the can carrier:
