Am I an idiot or what? 4th -> 5th?

No, did not loose my shirt on the trade. actually traded it for a car we liked. and I totalled my 99 runner an hour after getting home with the car. and got the 4th gen a few days later in a personal sale.

but the end result is, I went from a 5th to 4th, and could not possibly say anything bad about doing it. the full time awd, gate closing, V8, blah blah blah. its just a better rig. they really went back in time. going back to your roots should not be cheeping it up and selling it as that. the V6 was stout, ran real nice. the seat position was nice. I did like the layout of the inside, very nice, no hamburger tray, WTF? After having 3 4th gens and buying one of the first 5th Gens, I was happy for about six months with it, then it started to ache me how it rolled and tucked, and you could not drive it spiritedly. not without the Limiteds XREAS. 5gen towed fine, seemed to be happy with what I towed, atv's. I guess the 4th just had more little things that felt better, seem to be better thought out, minus window switches, argh, and overall I like driving it way better. less rolly poolly.

When all the V8 4th gens are dead. we will miss them. I dont know what will replace a 4th Gen, I guess a lexus variant of the current 4runner, something used as to not pay the obsurd price of new. with the 4.6L engine.

My 99 had more features than my 2010. I guess I should of seen the door going back in time then. live and learn. Hopefully in the next few years the big T can pony up some upgrades. But I wont hold my breath, they seem to live large on few changes until a complete update.

Things i liked about the 2010 Sequoia:
- Seat Height (it didnt feel like i was sittin on the floor, but felt like i had to "jump" out of the ride in order to not land too awkward, and im 6-1!!)
- Storage Capacity (its big. Bottom Line)
- Engine response (5.7L V8 is powerful)
- The Satellite radio

Things i disliked about the 2010 Sequoia
- Gas Mileage (i knew this going into it, so it wasnt a shock)
- the 6-speed tranny (shifted oddly. When downshifting from braking, it would "jump forward" a little)
- The lack of protection on the body (the metal edge closest to the wheelwell is very vulnerable to anything that kicks up, and the doors have zero protection from anything whatsoever)
- Parking it: Its WIDE...and door-dings are inevitable (refer to comment above)
- The front end that looks the same as the Tundra is boring...just boring.
- Feels "tin-y"...not tiny...but sounds hollow, like tin with nothing else insulating it.
- The CEL light that led to 9 days in the shop after owning it for 6 days, 110 miles and found out that the cam springs that were installed when manufactured were incorrect.
- The payment. OUCH.

Just ordered a new exhaust tip, skid plate, floor mats and hood protector for my '08 4Runner V8 Sport Edition I just picked up :)

Not sure how this has all shaken out.... but I'd say this much..... be very careful about dumping that V8 unless you are absolutely sick of it or it is giving you grief.

I've been all over the place on this very issue. I started with a Pathfinder. Liked it. Hated Nissan dealers. Engine was a champ though. So I upgraded to an FJ Trail Teams in 2008 because I got a sweet deal and I'd always wanted a Toyota. Drove it. Loved it. Hated the part time 4x4 system though as I did more freeway driving than offroad and have two tiny kids and hated the backseat deal.

So..... I had a 2007 4Runner Sport full-time 4x4 and a V8 and all the goodies except leather seats. I LOVED It. Only problem. I'm 6'1" and it had a sunroof so I had no headroom and I'm a bit wide for the seats and with my destroyed spine I realized I just felt more comfortable in an FJ from strictly a seating point of view. That was all. I tried the 5th Generation 4Runner and it was just too expensive and to me it was totally equal to the FJ in pretty much every area and was behind the 4th Gen I already had in several ways (looks included, but mostly drivetrain). That 4th Generation was basically a Prado which I'd rather have over any other vehicle on earth, but that's another discussion! :)

So I went back and forth and back and forth. I finally settled on getting another FJ because they were cheaper and my back needed the wider seating area.

Now..... I miss the heck out of the 4Runner. I LOVED the drive system. It was smooth, comfortable, powerful, looked great, sounded great, etc. If you are comfortable just keep it. Add a few things. Make sure you keep up on the timing belt change and such. Maybe go to all high quality fluids and add something nifty like a cool GPS system and bluetooth or something. Maybe a slight lift and some sweet tires. Make it feel like new. You own it. It will maintain value for quite a while and you could still pick up a lightly used 2010 in a year if you still wanted to and come out even further ahead on cash.

The only thing that has prevented me from going bonkers over losing the 4Runner is that my wife has a Pilot which is a nice vehicle for trucking the kids around. It's not a 4Runner. Not by a mile when it comes to off-roading. But it's good for trips and safe and she loves it. So we're good.

Personally I'd keep the FJ over a 5th Generation 4Runner just due to the fact that the 5G's are so expensive. If you need the back 2 doors and have the cash though.... get whatever makes you happy. Take it from somebody who has been there. I have that new V6 and it is a piece of crap compared to the V8. The V6 is an incredible engine though.... so that just tells you how much I think of that V8. It is phenomenal. If I had the money I'd put one with the same drivetrain in my FJ today regardless of cost or trouble. It would be a sweet setup. I love the all-time setup and the fact that they never put it on an FJ with an automatic was an idiotic decision.

I dumped a 2010 Sequoia to go back to a 4th gen. 4Runner. I actually lowered my payments big time and wasnt crushed, not even bruised or skinned! I'll have the '08 4Runner paid off in a little over a year, and im happy as a clam now.

Im thinkin' when the '09 leases start rolling in soon, i'll look for a gem for the wife! Keep the '03 and garage it...supe it up with some mods, etc.

I'm sure the payments are lower in your situation. But my question is how much did you lose on the Sequoia? You can lower your payments and still end up taking a bath on the value of the vehicle you dumped.

Not as bad as you would think! The Sequoia was a 2010 and the '11's were rolling out, and this one was sitting on the lot for a LONG time. Almost an entire year. Sticker was in the low 40's, i got it for $36k. Keep in mind this thing didnt even have door sill protectors, floor mats or anything "extra". Granted the "standard equipment" on the rig is decent, but even the salesman told me "thing thing has nothing extra", and that was ok. I dont drive long trips that require me to be entertained.

When i traded it in, at first they wanted to give me $32k, i refused, they went up to $34k, refused again, came back with a $34,750 and brought the price of the 4Runner down by over a grand, refused, brought the 4Runner down another $1250, i remained interested, got them to throw in a Platinum Extended Warrantee (there was a 7yr/100k extended powertrain on the Sequoia cuz of a cam spring issue that i b*tched and whined about to Toyota that caused the CEL to go off, looooooong story) so i think i did pretty good. You may disagree, but i feel content.

I don't disagree. That's not bad at all. I figured you were going to lose more money than that.

I think you guys are hurting the feeling of 5th gen owners upstairs....

This is true and no pun intended… but I do hope that someone from Toyota:bash: reads forum like this and will try to at least do mid-cycle update to 5th gen to bring back V8 and either 4th gen drive train (AWD) or 6sp and AWD from GX460 for all 5th generations trim levels…:frog:
I am sure it is wishful thinking, but we all can have dreams once in a while…
But if this dream will come true then original poster will definitely will have very good reasons for going from 4th to 5th generation...

Man, I wouldn't do it.... you have a fantastic vehicle with no payments.... put the payment amounts aside in another savings account and save that money for something else.

I'd love nothing more then to have my 4Runner paid off, knowing I have such a great vehicle with years of service left.

Im with you, i pay cash for all my vehicles and dont buy new..and I do not like the 5th gen at all...

well - It seems that most folks said to not trade.......but I aint like most folks I got the 2010 TE with upgraded BFG AT's at $16,285 difference. And the dealer let me rob the old one of the stuff I had put on it. I left there a happy man and have not looked back. Here's how it all went down-

I took the TE for a two hour / 80 mile test drive, even hooked up to a trailer with ATV and climbed a h&lluva mountain with it. This same mtn causes me to downshift my 7.3 powerstroke to hold 45mph with same load. I had to go to 3rd in the t4r but it held 45mph at less than 4k rpm - not bad I thought. The v8 t4r had to do the same shift to maintain the same speed, albeit at a few less rpms.

A few things I noticed: cons
1. yes, it does give up a little "off the line" power to the v8
2. yes, rpm's run a little higher at any given speed
3. The slide-out cargo tray is a p.o.s., that's coming out!

Pros:
1.The power is more than sufficent - Im not a racecar driver. Evenso I find myself going much faster than I feel = the riding experience masks your speed.
2. better gas mileage =so far on one tank of gas, I average 19.2 mpg, stands to improve over time I understand.
3. The interior is much roomier, better laid out. Back seat area much better.
4. The ride is better/smoother, if not quieter - as quiet
5. The off-road capability is equal or better. (Im in the South, so snow/ice is not a consideration)
7. I like the idea of part-time 4wd, locking r-diff is outstanding feature.
6. It looks a lot better to me, much more "tough" looking, not like a glorified mini-van, kinda reminds me of the old "Scout" and even has flavor of old FJ's....hurumph, hurumph
7. Better stock ground clearance. I hunt in rocky terrain with rough rocky roads, so this was a biggie for me.
8. HEADROOM! I'm a big guy.....
9. Electronics - backup camera, bluetooth, etc, etc.
10. water-resistant upholstery.
11. more than 2 power-points! Always thought that was asinine...

All that being said, the pros far outweighed the cons for me. Now if I was a total motor-head, then I can see the appeal of the v8 - I get it. But it was a total package decision for me.

and then there is the $$$$$$ - I just turned 40
and you can't take it with you can you?

Good for you.... Congratulations!

Your happy, and that is all that matters.

Congratulations blademan! As long as your happy that's all that matters.

Someone else in this thread asked about your test drive.
When I purchased my 4Runner I had two test drives.
The first was about 15 minutes. The second was 24 hours & 140+ miles.
Before the 2nd test drive the dealer even filled the tank. People in my office were shocked
That the dealer let me do an "extended test drive". That ETD sealed the deal. Got another fill-up w/o even asking when I made the purchase.

Ok I know I am pushing this even more off topic but on the subject of test drives, I just had a flashback.

Back in the 80's the local car dealer let my Dad and I use a Triumph TR-7 for a couple weeks. With a dealer plate! Ah... The good old days.....
