There's no question it was their money. The treasury department seized it decades ago during the Iranian revolution.

So, if you're holding a huge chunk of their money, and they've agreed to give us back one of our spies, why not use it to make sure they do what they say they're going to do? We were going to give it back to them either way as part of the nuclear deal.

And the reason we're making deals with them is so we don't have to send troops over there to die fighting them. I hear people all the time say it would be worth it, but is it worth YOUR life, or your kid's lives, or just someone else?

on that same token, if they are our allies(I don't believe they are) they should be returning our people without question, or payment. and foremost, if they are our "friends", they should not be holding our people to begin with.

I think that's the point....their money which the US was kind enough to hold for them for a while. I have no problem with that by the way, it's the spin that is dividing the USA and here too but much less than south of the border.

There is a long history of Iran getting back part of its frozen assets after Americans are released. As part of an agreement that led to the 52 remaining embassy hostages being freed in 1981, Iran received $3 billion of its $12 billion in frozen assets. The rest was used to repay American creditors or put into escrow to cover judgments against Iran.

well, its easy to see why they are holding Americans.
we keep buying them back. that is the sole reason we don't negotiate with terrorists in the first place.

Haven't I read that Iranian officials are calling it a ransom....that we paid to get our people back? You could make the argument that they've spun the story to their advantage but if its their money and we were going to return it anyway, what advantage would they gain in saying it was something it isn't?

The guy was a spy, and they're not our friends. They're a state that was on the verge of being a nuclear power within a year unless we intervened. We could do that by negotiating, or we could have done it by going to war. We've already proven that when we go to war in that part of the world we can win, but it takes forever to clean up the mess afterwards. Negotiations made more sense.

They want the PR, and the sad part is it's one of our presidential candidates that's giving it to them.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that this was their money. NONE. You can read news article after news article about when Carter ordered the state department to hold it.

As for flag waving is it bad if someone waves a flag that you don't agree with? How about the Westboro baptist church waving flags at soldiers funerals calling them baby killers and your going to hell. It's pretty common.

Or LGBTQ groups waving the rainbow flag. It's putting their beliefs in someone's face that may or may not agree with them. Are you against that as well or just groups you don't like?

If you dont see the difference between all of those flags there is really no point in continuing this debate.

It's not about the difference between the flags. It's about the fact that all of those different flags can be waved with the same protection under the first amendment. I was asking if your an equal opportunity hater or bigoted against all other that you don't agree with.

It's not about if you or I agree with any of them. It's if you think it's only ok to wave certain ones.

If you don't want to answer that one I don't blame you. You don't have the freedom of speech, religion, peaceful assembly, press, petition. That the 1st amendment of the Bill of Right in the United States of America.
