I have been trying to locate the source of a really annoying squeak from the front left wheel well area for about 3 months. I finally found the source and thought I would post it here in case anyone else is experiencing this noise. This noise was driving me crazy. It sounded exactly like styrofoam rubbing together. There is a splash guard in the wheel well that looks like it is meant to keep dirt and water from contacting the exhaust system. The fasteners that hold the splash guard to the frame were loose and the wind was blowing the splash guard enough to make the fasteners squeak when they rubbed against the frame. Anyway, hopefully this can help others avoid going crazy from this noise. I just used a couple of dabs of silicone to keep the fasteners from moving and the noise went away.

THANK YOU for posting this. I recall seeing it a while ago, thinking "thank goodness my 4Runner does not do this"...and then started going crazy a couple of weeks ago when the squeak started.
It honestly sounded like it was coming from behind the instrument cluster. However, after I checked the clips, I could see the problem!
The strange thing is that the clips on the passenger side are not lose. Weird...
Anyway, thanks for the tip. Without it, I am sure I never would have found the problem!

mine does the same thing on the driver's side only. so weird that it seems to be so common and so specific to the one side of the vehicle. :shrug:
There were a few annoying squeaks on T4R.org earlier this week, but I think Jesse1983 took care of them...
