Sorry if this is common knowledge, but I'm not a mechanically inclined person when it comes to vehicles. Would bilstein 5100's and 1.5" rear spacers be all I need to lift the vehicle 2.5" front/1.5" rear? No aftermarket coils necessary? I always thought shocks didn't lift a vehicle, I thought the coils were what dictated the ride height. Sorry if it's a dumb question.
You are correct in your assumption. The way Bilstein boosts the front is by relocating the springs on the shock body. There are 4 notches cut into the body and the spring cups are installed in the position where you would like the lift (in your case the top notch would yield 2.5"). Bear in mind the higher you lift the front the harder it will be to maintain factory spec caster, and an alignment will be necessary regardless. Most people who lift more than a couple inches also get an aftermarket pair of upper control arms (UCA) that will allow the caster to be gained back. Where in Louisiana are you? I'm up in the Fort Polk area.
So all I would need are the bilsteins and a couple spacers for the rear? No additional springs? I'm from West Monroe, originally from Jena. Off topic a little bit, but are there any good offroading spots in your area? Not much here, although I still need some work before I'm truly offroad ready.
No additional springs. I did your planned route for about the first year I owned mine and before the bumper upgrades. No place to wheel around here. I have become a regular member at Barnwell, with a club named ArkLaTex Off Road, loosely based out of Shreveport. Look them up. We just did a day trip to Barnwell last week, and some of them are going for a 4 Wheel Parts appreciation weekend over Labor Day. In fact we had a lady and her son from Monroe ride with us last week. I think it's about a 3 hour drive for you one way. I also just posted in the Louisiana thread in the General forum. I see you have a couple comments in there. Good luck.
I've got 5100's on the front, paired with 2" coils from Ironman. You can pair the 5100's with any spring you like, doesn't have to be oem. Doing it this way allows you to have the 5100's set lower than you would with stock, decreasing the compression of the spring and giving better ride quality while not sacrificing any lift height. I work out to be right around 2.5" with near stock ride quality. Anything over 2" you really should consider getting UCA's too. Keeps the alignment proper, although some have managed to get away without.
For the money, its really hard to beat the Bilsteins.
My local performance shop says you can just add spacer keeping the stock suspension for the additional 1.5-2 inch lift on my stock '17
Would someone clarify why the billsteins are needed?

My 17 OR Premium is completely stock. Measuring from the ground to the top of the wheel well (outside of the fender) the front measures 27.5" and the rear measures 30 so I guess I need to bump up 2.5" just to level out? Other than 5100's is there any thing else that I need (uca's, dif drop kit, etc.) to level the front end? I'm not looking for a full lift, just want to level out the front with back. What setting would I set the 5100's?
Thank you,
JDG
This is my first 4runner after a lifetime of Subarus so it's fun to see what I can do. The stance is great but the ride improvement is intriguing. I race all over so I don't want to ruin what I already have and if spacers do that then its worth the extra money. If all you want is for your truck's body to be higher up in the air then the spacers are all you need. It won't ride any better and it won't handle any better - it'll be worse - but it will be taller.
I just installed a full set of 5100's
10% off from 4wheelparts.com they were 358$
Only complaint was I waitied too long, what an improvement.
Sure I got lifted by choosing the 1.75" groove but what I really enjoy is the stability, zero body roll, zero nose dive and better handling.
Thanks to this forum for all the info.
