Another Bilstein 5100 question

I appreciate that. I'm much more patient than he is, and so far its helped me out in the long run. This definitely looks like something I could do with a little help

These two links show how it's done. These tutorial videos cover installation on the Tacoma but it's the exact same procedure on the 5th gen 4Runner. If you have some mechanical ability, some tools, jack and jack stands, then the install is very straight forward and fairly easy....just take your time.

Ordered a set of Bilstein 5100's and they're arriving today. I'm also getting some Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires next week. Is there any reason I should wait to install the shocks until I get the tires or does it not matter?

Are you guys paying for installation, or do you install the 5100's yourself? Friend of mine just had 5100's installed on his '14 SR5 and they charged him almost $500 in labor, AND they managed to pinch his ABS in the process.

I'm debating whether I'm going to take it to a shop for install, or get some automotively-inclined friends to help me out.

I was on the fence myself, but went ahead and did the front and rear 5100s on Monday with a friend. Jack, Jack stands, basic sockets/wrenches. Took us about 4 hours. The rear is really a 30-45 minute job, and the second side of the front took half of what the first shock was.

I was quoted $450 for install and an alignment, which isn't too bad. Did the install myself and then had my local Toyota dealer do an alignment for $85. More money for mods now! :naughty:

I'll see if I can find them, but there were a couple of posts that listed torque specs for everything when finishing up..

EDIT: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/152966-torque-spec-help.html

second post here has a really useful diagram with specs

For alignment purposes, probably should do them relatively at the same time. It might be fine if you do the alignment on the old tires then put the new tires on after the alignment, but no need to chance it.

Spacers Question

I had the 285 nitto terra grapplers installed with a 2.5/1.5 lift. I already trimmed the bumper and moved the fender liner forward and there isn't rubbing anymore even at full lock however I'm debating adding the spacers and just wanted to get an idea if further cutting will be necessary. I would be using the 1.25 spidertrax spacers. Below is the 4runner as it stands now.

Been stalking these threads and finally pulled the trigger: Billstein 5100 all four, 1.75" setting, Dobinson's 599 rear springs for 1" rear lift and Falken Wildpeak AT3W @ 285/70r17. It looks much better in person than in pictures. I am totally happy with this set of upgrades, but only one day of driving so far.

Not sure if i missed it but do you have the wheel spacers installed in these pictures? The 4runner looks awesome!

Afternoon folks! installed @ 2.5 front last night with stock springs, and toytec 2 inch in rears.

visually i can see some positive camber; will a trip to get an alignment correct this? Or do I need to get some upper control arms with additional camber adjustment?

F Photobucket - and I had some serious camber as well. I had it aligned with stock UCA's and mine were able to be put back into spec.

The lift changes everything about your front suspension geometry, so all your alignment specs will be way off. Best to get it aligned soon, or your tires will wear prematurely.

Bringing camber back into spec after a lift usually isn't hard. It's reduced caster that's the problem with stock UCAs, and which aftermarket UCAs address.

Some folks (including myself) don't mind how it drives with reduced positive caster and stock UCAs. It tends to be a little more wandery on center. It's really up to you. Tire wear is not affected.

There are a zillion threads on T4R about this -- a bit surprised you haven't seen them if you've been a member since 2011.

thanks for the info! will hit up an alignment shop asap.

yeah i haven't really done anything to the car until now; just jumped back on the forum to try and catch up.

Ah, I see.

Might be worth having a look at some "5th Gen alignment" threads to get acquainted before you take it in.

Caster and camber are both set by adjusting the cam bolts on the LCAs. It can take some juggling between the front and rear cam bolts to extract maximum caster angle while keeping camber close to spec. A good alignment tech will stick with it until he gets it as close as possible. A bad alignment tech won't even touch the LCA cam bolts and will just set the toe and tell you he did the best he could -- called a "toe and go" -- so be wary.

With a 2.5" front lift and the rear LCA cam bolt adjustment maxed out, about 2.0º-2.5º caster is usually the best that can be obtained.

much appreciated, started reading up on alignment threads.

Attached the pictures I intended to post...2.5 in front (stock springs) and 2 inch Toytec springs in back. 275/70/17 Cooper ST3's.

Lift height is higher than i expected...but I do like the leveling that it came out to be.

Planning for some wheels next....17x8 -10 offset and perhaps up sizing the tires dimensions. 285's, or maybe stick with 275 with more aggresive tread pattern.

Pics of my 5100 set at 1.75" with 1" rear spacers

This thread was super helpful in my decision making process so wanted to share my finished pics for anyone else searching for something similar. 2016 SR5, Bilstein 5100's set to 1.75" in front with 1" Cornfed spacers in back. FN F(x) pro wheels in dark gunmetal with 265 General Grabbers. Great stance with stock tire seize I think and great for a daily driver.

That looks awesome! How's the ride compared to stock? I am thinking of doing this exact same setup.

Can anyone compare the 6112 setup at 2" to the 5100s with either OME 883 or 884 coils....debating these two setups for a city driving 4runner. or could just go with the 5100 on stock springs. obviously the 6112s would be the most expensive route. either way, i would probably do 5100s in the rear with a spacer, but looking for the most comfortable ride on the pavement with a decent amount of potholes etc.

Just following up after alignment last week...camber looks good! but only a couple degrees caster on left and 1.2 degrees on the right.
This is with the 2.5 inch setting in front...fyi.

I have cooper at3 275/70/17's currently and am considering 285 duratracks.

Judging by the clearance i have now, will need to do the fender liner mod....but looks like i have some wiggle room behind the tire.
In the picture attached, that is as close as the tire comes to contact.

Me things i am good to go with the 285's....unless i am misunderstanding something?

Thanks for the help all!

OME coils are going to net you a rough 3" lift, thus requiring upper control arms to be installed in order to get the proper alignment. I literally just wen thru this same predicament. In the end, i went with a full 5100 setup, front and rear, paired with Wheeler's (Eibach) T1 and T13 springs. I havent installed yet, but it'll net me a 2.5/1.5" lift front to rear. I'll post back with pics once they're on and aligned.

EDIT: i just realized you were referring to the rears. Disregard. However, i still recommend the Wheeler's springs!
