Another Fun Noise

Hey all, :cry2:

For the past few months, the 4Runner has been making a funny noise in the rear while making a left turn.

While turning, the body rolls a bit to passenger then a noise that sounds like two metal plates rattling can be heard from the drivers' side rear.

I checked the brakes, nothing loose. Also made sure my shock hadn't blown and was tightened down properly. It's not a constant noise, so I feel like it shouldn't be a bearing.

After checking everything else out, my thought is that its the panhard bar/bushings. Maybe even my links. Has anyone had this happen with their 4Runner?

ALSO, I'm only running 3" (which has probably sagged to 2.5") of suspension lift- perhaps a panhard drop bracket would help? I have no clue!

90% of the time on 3rd and 4th gens, metal rattling in the undercarriage at particular flex or engine RPM is loose exhaust shields. They like to rust and come loose, causing annoying but harmless noises.

Does it sound like a “heavy” rattle, more clunky - or a “light” rattle, like a tinny vibration?

More of a clunky noise, you can hear it and somewhat feel it.

A few things to check:

1. If you don’t have your full size spare in place, the cable and end piece that fits in the spare’s hub may be swinging around making contact with something.

2. Check your rear sway bar mounts and end links. Check the tightness of the mounts, and check for any play in the end links.

3. Heard a few other members say their rear sway bar had actually broken in half - with no noticeable adverse handling. I’d check this.

4. Make sure all skid plates are secure, and are not making contact with anything they shouldn’t be touching. I have a similar noise in the FRONT sometimes when I reinstall my two front skid plates after an oil change. They rub/contact each other and can cause a clanky noise.

Good luck. Noises like that can be frustrating.

Borrow a friends GoPro and strap it down under the truck. Aim it at a few different spots.

Check all of your bushings for all of your rear suspension arms and bars.

noises ive had that sound like this and drove me insane and then i figure it out were:

- Heat shields

- LCA bushings <-- found with gopro cam

- exhaust flange at the spring bolt, after cats before muffler. <-- currently driving me crazy until i fix it.

-inner fender on passenger side rubbing outer fender portion-

- suspension bushings worn

I had a similar sound when the body flexed. Turned out that my roof rack cross rails weren't tight, so I torqued down the star nuts some. Noise gone.
