I was asked about the cross bar I set up. I think it's better to have a write-up to explain and this may helpful to someone else.
I used to have a long cargo box(over 92" long). The position of the normal cross bar on 4Runner's roof rail is very awkward. I can't put the cargo box on without interfering the opening of tail gate. I can't move the cargo box further front either because the front cross bar can't be moved further front any more.
I didn't want to go with a full length rack like GOBI's, so I made a "roof rail extension bar" like this:
I drilled a hole in the front end, so I can fasten my home made cross bar later.
The is how the "extension bar" was fastened on factory roof rail. The front:
The rear:
Took off the "extension bar"
The bolt was inserted into the roof rail. The giant nut here was not for fastening, it's used as a spacer.
This is the tricky part. You have to use a bolt with a square end and a correct diameter. So when you fasten the nut, the bolt won't rotate. This kind of bolt is used on wood post, and can be found in HomeDepot.
