Another oil question

So I went to my buddys place to check out his 2013 Tacoma. His engine (1GR-FE) has the canister style oil filter mounted up on the top of the engine...good for him since hes will not have to do open chest surgery to get at thge filter like us 4R guys.

Wnat caught my attention was his oil filler cap. It says to use 5W-30. I thought that was strange since the basics of each vehicle's engine are supposed to be the same. I know the 4R engine has a higher horsepower rating.

Does anyone have any good theories as to why the tacoma V6 requires oil that is different from the 4R V6??

The engines are completely different. The 4th generation 4runner 1gr and the tacoma are the same.

Oh. I ASSumed that the engines were basically the same since the model number was the same. I guess the 1GR-FE refers to an engine "family"??

It's down to the heads and VVTi vs Dual VVTi on the cams AFAIK. But that does make them two very different engines - probably have different pistons and rings, too (therefore the oil viscosity variance). In addition, I know my '13 T4R is spec'd for a 10K OCI with full synthetic 0W20 - I'm not sure about the standard VVTi motor OCI recommendations...

Bottom end has changed as well. The crank, pistons, and cylinder wall have changed.

The engine has been almost completely redesigned from the bottom up and the exhaust timing gear is where the oil filter used to be .
