yes it will hyper flash. I'm currently trying to figure out if i can get the wiring harness or pigtail to make switchbacks work.

Those do look sweet! I see they also sell load resistors which should/might work on our trucks to eliminate the hyper flashing. Recon Accessories: Part # 26420 - LED Light Bulb Load Resistor Kit

I tried some other LED cluster bulbs in mine awhile back and couldn't get over the hyper flash mode with them.I really like my current superwhite PIAA 1156 bulbs in the DRL/turn signals for now but maybe someday I'll tire of them and try the LED load resistors.
 
Thanks Mr Antman for helping me with the DRL mod! It was pretty daunting pulling apart my dash and screwing around with wiring as I have zero experience dealing with any of this stuff, but your pics and write up were spot on. I have new PIAA bulbs on the way for the fogs and DRLs to complete the look. Now, I just hope my truck doesn't die on the way to work tonight because of me touching something I wasn't supposed to.... :lol:
 
Help! Blown Bulbs

OK, so I need some help. I did the DRL mod last night, an everything has been fine... better than fine - the lights look(ed) awesome! That is until about an hour ago. My driver side DRL bulb blew. I knew something was up when I was driving and my left turn signal started blinking super fast. I pulled into a plaza and got out to see that indeed the driver's side DRL was out. I drove over to Auto Zone and picked up some new bulbs. I installed the new bulb (with the truck off), started it up and walked to the front. NO driver's side light. Turned off the truck and took out the bulb again to make sure it was seated correctly. Except the bulb looked foggy, so I took it out and saw that the bulb was instantly blown! My dilemma is now that the passenger side works just fine. Driver's side... another story apparently.

I assume I have a short? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!! :beer:
 
I just looked over the wire diagram, and it appears you blew the main computer. Just kidding. Sorry! :)

Ok- it looks to me like when you tapped into that light green wire on plug F11, you either cut the insulation, or nicked the yellow wire on that plug as well. Yellow is the hot feed for the drivers DRL bulb. Seems to be grounding out somewhere under there.

How did you tap into the wire? If you used the 3M tap, it's entirely possible you squeezed the yellow wire while terminating the connection.

Take a close look!

I gotta say when I first read your response, my heart sank! All I saw was "it appears you blew the main computer" and I couldn't read any further! Hahaha

Anyway, I took everything back apart (becoming a pro at this by now - both the dash and front bumper) and took a very close look at the wires. Yes, I did use a 3M tap but I didn't touch any other wire other than the light green wire. Anyway, I will mess around with it another time, but for now, just took off the ground wire - and reverted it back to factory stock. So now the DRL's come on with the stalk, and off when the headlights are on.

At this point I'm really unsure what could have went wrong...? :gun4:

ANTMAN MOD # 9.1

DRL/Foglight MOD Improvement

Well guys, it's been awhile, but here's another (small) one. I like this one, since it makes two mods work together seamlessly. :)


This MOD is for those of you running both the DRL, and the Independent Foglight MODs, or is that just me doing that? Hmmmmm ....Links:

I am running Hyper white bulbs in the DRL's, and PIAA yellow fogs. I like the fact that the DRL's look like driving lights while they are on (albeit not extremely bright). The PIAA's are awesome as well, especially in the wet...

Problem is, when I switched the yellow PIAA's on, they look kinda dumb with the DRL bulbs on. Like this:

Basically, you will replace the standard relay you used for the Foglight MOD, with a 5 prong relay, and change the ground setup.

This relay will have a terminal marked "87a". What on earth will this do? I'll tell ya. This extra terminal is like the evil twin of terminal #87, which is grounded from the Fogmod. When 87 is grounded, 87a is open (not grounded), and visa versa.


SO.... replace the relay for the Fogmod. Plug everything in exactly the same, leaving 87a open, for now...

Now, when you did the DRL MOD, you tapped into the light green wire and grounded it.

To make this MOD work, cut the light green wire. Once cut, you will have two ends (duh!) Connect a short length of wire to the end attached to the white plug. Insulate the other end of the light green wire. You can use butt connectors to make these connections.

One more step.




Crimp a female spade connector to your new ground wire, and plug into relay terminal 87a.

Here's what the MOD does.

Everything works like it did before. Fogs are totally independent. Turn signals work perfectly. The DRL's are on whenever the truck is running : **BUT** When you turn the fogs on, the DRL's turn off ; when the DRL's are on, the fogs are off. And, it all happens automatically.

Yellow or white, can't have both!

I only wish I did not have two left hands when it comes to wiring - lots of nice Anty Mods here I'm just too dumb to try. Dermal the hell out of my truck? Yeah, no problem. Splice one wire? I'm off crying to mama :crybaby:

Apparently, having a large dildo helps to overcome those kinds of problems. I'm sure that Antman could provide some insight in that regard.....I still cannot for the life of me understand why he needs to include a dildo in his provisions, but then I'm not going to bash someone for their peculiarities.

Just wanted to let you guys know, I had to troubleshoot this MOD today.

When the truck was running, things weren't working as planned. The DRL's were getting a ground from 2 sources, and stayed on unless the headlights were on. None of this happened with the ignition in "run" when I tested it. With the truck actually running, things changed...

Everything is sorted out now- had to change the ground setup a 'lil bit. Updated the post above, works perfectly.:zoom:

Absolute Madness

Well, after 3 days of :redbrick:, brainstorming, troubleshooting, and many pages of this stuff...

-I am finally happy with the DRL/Independent Fog MODS. They are now talking to each other nicely, and working the way they should.


Here's what the final project does:


** DRL's are controlled by the factory switch. They turn off with the switch, and DRL's are on with the parking lights AND the headlights.

** Foglights can be turned on at any time, as long as the ignition is on.

** Whenever the foglights are on, the DRL's are automatically turned off. (Because I don't like the way it looks with both on at the same time...)

** Turn signals work the way they should.




I don't think I am going to post a full writeup on this MOD, because I'm not sure anyone is crazy enough, or cares enough to do it. :sleepy: If you do plan on doing this, you need to complete the Independent Fog MOD first.

I had to do it because after several failed attempts to make all of the above conditions work, I felt defeated. No way Mr 4Runner(NM156) was winning this one.


Basically, the DRL's are turned on by grounding this green wire.

The factory wiring provides this ground when the switch is set to "DRL", or "Parking Light" only. If you ground the green wire with a jumper, the DRL's can't be turned off with the factory switch. I got around that by only applying an extra ground (via relay) when the taillights are on(meaning the head, and or parking lights are on). To make the DRL's turn off when the fogs are on, the entire circuit is cut (again via relay). This same circuit is normally closed (via, um...relay) to allow the DRL's to function when the switch is set to "DRL". Now you know why it took me a few days. Yes, it is confusing!

To make all this stuff work (at once) requires 3 separate relays, 13(!) different connections, and alot of patience to make the wiring look neat and clean. But, it's done. It works perfectly, and I win... :flipoff: That said...

I am planning on drawing up a wiring diagram(no way you can figure out the one above- it's written in Antman :wow:) and posting it soon. I'll snap a few pics of the area where the relays are mounted up as well.

I'm a geek, I know. :nerd:
